Thanks. Yeah windows are Hi-Kool R10 tint all around. Light tint tea-colored like the original windows.... i thought it was a nice classic tint for the car.

Yeah i need the airvent covers. I just replaced the airvents with newer ones five minutes ago, and was thinking about what I could do with that section of the car other than the covers.... trying to think outside the box!

Now THAT looks like a lot of fun as well as a properly dirty 900.

It was...

London - Gibraltar - Marrakech - down the coast of Western Sahara - Mauritania (only a 7km no-mans-land at the border, complete with minefield...), Senegal (who wouldn't let any car older than 5yo in, end of - €250 per car in bribes), Gambia - where the cars were auctioned off.

Sven ('88 900i 8v, CIS injection) got us there, although he was fairly tired by the end - no exhaust, not many electrics left, and the very last morning (take him to the auction) saw a pool of gearbox oil sat underneath...

Hello everyone, just joined SC, so here's my first post. This is the car that started it all for me. It started out as a very plain, ordinary 900 turbo convertible but over the past few years she's gotten a face lift. Right now the car is just about finished, the only thing I still need which I cannot get here in the U.S. is a turbo_S badge for the trunk lid. If anyone can help me out, I'd be greatly appreciative. Enjoy the pictures:

Orca

To clarify, the "Carlsson" bodykit is the Airflow bodykit (on the classic 900). They are one and the same. The Airflow kit for the facelift C900 was released in 1987 and became known in some markets as the "Carlsson" kit, due to the special edition 'Carlsson' in the UK.

http://www.pjgh.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/saab/specials/pages/1990-1991_carlsson.html

For replicas, Johanssons Motorsport and Erebuni make reasonable copies and can be tracked down on the internet:

http://www.pjgh.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/saab/specials/pages/bodykit_johanssons_motorsport.html
http://www.pjgh.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/saab/specials/pages/bodykit_erebuni.html

Erebuni are in the US, BTW. I think their kit, given a little filling could be made to look about right. I prefer Johanssons, myself, being a fibreglass copy of the proper Airflow kit, but they're in Sweden. In the UK, Malbrad made fibreglass copies of the Airflow kit - they're at http://www.malbrad.co.uk if you fancy importing their stuff.

hi Orca, I've been searching for the Carlsson bumpers for quite some time. The last time i checked, Erebuni does not produce the kit anymore, and they all out of stock....

trying to get someone to fabricate the bumpers locally, but no one has been able to give me a definite "YES" yet....

and johanssons' seems pretty neat, problem is i have zero knowledge of the swedish language :( .. do you think they will send to Singapore??

the nearest i know where the whole kit has been fabricated is in..... Bangkok!! teej's got a 4 door 900 with airflow kit!!! check out his thread

Pekhs - Many Swedes speak fluent English, so don't worry about the language, although don't just assume they will speak English to you ... ask first, politely ;)

I would think if you are prepared to pay for the transport, a business would be foolish to turn down trade. Send them an e-mail, or give them a ring to discuss? Likewise Malbrad in the UK.

2400 SEK is about 550 SGD ... per part from Johanssons. I've just given Malbrad a ring an they're quoting 225 GBP (680ish SGD) for the front bumper and 190 GBP (575ish SGD) for the rear bumper - they're willing to ship to Singapore, but couldn't give a price off the cuff as to shipping costs ... the items are bulky! They have shipped to Asia before, Aus and the US. I said if you were interested you'd call them to firm up a shipping price.

A few years ago the e-rumor was that Johanssons was placed on the Swedish blacklist for exports... supposedly they had issues that resulted in them not being allowed to ship outside the country.

Which is why Taylor's airflow was cool, even though his kit was a replica, it was one of very few Johanssons Motorsport kits to make it to the US before they closed the door.

haha yeah, actually I have the SPG rims (only 3 though:confused:), put the back seat in (ladies love it;)), air what covers?, have the whaletail waiting to be painted, got the 6 side panels, and can't afford clear indicators. And I just took the roof racks off because I wanted to put on the windcover thing to quiet down the sunrood open high speed drives.

Dilema: car is the champagne color, bumpers and whaletail black, and panels gray, don't know what to do. Go for two tone black or gray (bumpers need to be painted regardless), or repaint entire car, or paint bumpers and panels car color? oh the possibilities. Any suggestions? by the way, paint budget; DIY, cheap outside spray and I hit the inside of doors leave bay alone etc etc...
Thank you guys!

I'm assuming you like the black? looks like i'm gonna take off all the bumpers and spray those and the 6 side panels black at once...any paint recomendations? spray paint? wheel paint? buy the whole detail sprayer and use a compressor deal?

This is one of those examples of how good the Classic 900 looks. It's pure, it's simple. Of course, in our world there is room for alloy wheels, big spoilers, bodykits and cars dripping in accessories, but this image is quite a breath of fresh air.

Nice one ... you should be proud :cool:I agree completely.Very well said.:)

Well I'm going two tone black bodykit whaletail etc.. on my white c900, I think yours would look better with black rather than grey.. either way it will look wicked.

where did you get your airflow bumpers from (and how much :p ) ?

Alex, I really think you should keep it two-tone with the black kit. Take a proper side-view pic of your car and I'll photoshop something up. I think it's your best bet.

Junkyard and a little under $50 including the whaletail and a bunch of other little "trinkets".

And Joe, I'll prob get a picture sometime this weekend. Hopefully I'll pull the bumpers off to repaint them black, but I'm hesitant to use spray paint, I hear wheel paint works well? any recomendations? (there's also the AMAZING black rubbery bumper paint that would basically be bullet proof, but I can't find it and I'm sure it's $$$)

So I've been searching for a while, and finally found what I wanted....

I'll post pictures of my other Saabs when I can dig them up, but right now this is the only one on the road.

My 1990 900 SPG, Talladega Red, 108k miles (all service records since date of purchase, never been wrecked, TX/CA car).

http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/blammoSPG/Image003.jpg

http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/blammoSPG/Image005.jpg

http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/blammoSPG/Image004.jpg

Bought it around the 1st of September for a steal of a price. Picked it up and drove it 800 miles the next day. :)

Took it up to Troll Motors in Seattle (those guys are amazing - http://www.trollmotors.com/ very very dedicated smart guys. I won't take my Saab anywhere else. It's worth the drive...) and they went through it top to bottom, and found a few engine things (harmonic balancer, water pump, alternator). Had them do the 120k service, full tuneup etc. Drives like a charm.

Anyway, little list of things to clean up (windshield, drivers seat cracked, dash cracked, etc) but the frame is clean, and ZERO RUST anywhere on the body. Completely clean. I'm a very happy boy.

Every time I park and walk inside to work, I have to look back a couple times at my beautiful car... :)

(btw, beautiful 5-door. Always loved the hatchback tail and hated the 4-door tail..)

Got some new Ronal minilites down at the yard a few months back, and decided to mount my Michelin M+S tires for the upcoming winter. $80 for the set, plus about the same for ripping off the old useless tires, and mounting and balancing my existing set of M+S tires. I like how they bring out my brakes (I will probably paint the rear brakes next year, and then put in some slotted+dimpled rotors), but I'm still undecided how much I like the look of them vs. the more defined look of the 15-spokes. Whatever I decide, those will be my winter rims, and I'm getting some black 17" mesh wheels for my summer performance tires!

I know I know, I'm missing the rear right centre cap, which annoys me, but I only found 3 of them at the yard, so not much I can do except wait for another one to appear at the yard! If I decide to keep the minilites, I will need to refinish them, as two of the wheels definitely need attention (peeling and gouging), while the other two are mostly just dirty.

The white one is an 87' 8 Valve Turbo which the previous owner had breathed on ever-so-slightly (FMIC from a Volvo, 3" Downpipe and system, Heuschmid Head and cam, leather interior from a 9000)

But I needed this car to be a daily driver, and I found it a bit lairy to be honest - so I managed to find a nice sedate 16 Valve Light Pressure Turbo. (the red one)

The white one has now been sold, and I'm working through the niggles on the electrics.

The reason I needed a daily is because I also own this... Its my long term project/weekend car ;o)

....and then there's the 1990 900 Turbo convertible that I'm currently fixing. Bought it from a salvage auction after the interior was vandalised, now almost fixed. She's only done 140,000kms also:

Looking good, James - love the wheels

Thanks. How's the wife's vert doing? I'm curious to find out who the owner of her vert was in Singapore.

The wheels came from a parts 9000. The owner owns the workshop I frequent. He swapped his 9000 for a 9-5 and left the rims (with newish tyres) at his workshop. I happen to chance on them and convinced him that they were taking up valuable space in his workshop. They're not Super Aeros, but simply 9000 Aero rims. He had them spray painted in the grey you see, up to and including the ridge. It seems to work well with the rest of the car.

I'm surprised there is no rub on the 205/55R16s that came with the rims. I guess my rear springs are still holding up well. I might go down a step to 195s the next time I change tyres tho. The 205s in these track-widened rims stick very well - too well, in fact. I know there is no such thing as too much grip but they don't let up even when I am taking brown-pants corners that threaten to throw my passenger out. Only encourages more mischief.. :nono; Plus the rolling resistance is much more than my old 195s. I'm sure it's robbing me of at least 10% more fuel....

jameschong
25-07-08, 08:56 PM
Very nice James, the wood dash seems to work well in yours.

I think all 900s of that era (1993) were sold in Singapore with the wood dash. Two of the four guides that hold the dash in are broken, and I'm waiting for another more pressing need to remove the dash before I fix it.

The wood steering wheel was put on later by another owner. I'm not exactly a fan of it, but it's alright.

Is that a skidplate in front?Yes, it is - replica of a SAAB sport&rally skidplate, it's aluminyum. From saabsavior (part of a group buy, he doesn't make them regularly anymore). It's gotten more than it's fair share of usage.

Edit- better pic:

I know I posted already to this thread, but I came home from vacation to a wonderful surprise...

my dear sweet wife talked my neighbor, who used to own a professional detailing business, into detailing my car while I was gone. I wanted to get his help because I was a little intimidated to do it myself, after hearing from him all the ways people can "screw it up forever". Anyway, I opened the garage, and there's my car, parked at an angle.. and SHINEY!

Anyway, enough talking.. the pix.... 1990 900 SPG..

Latest news is that the Silver Sled won the Victorian Saab Car Club of Australia Concours a month ago. She won the c900 category and the best car on the day over all. Pretty chuffed with that... the third trophy in the club it has won too!

Anyways... few more shots...

Sorry to hear you sold your Aero! :( You must get into another one soon! Got my fingers crossed for you that you find a good example for the right price near you!

Red - especially with bodykit & whaletail - is VERY late-80s. The thinking man's Guards Red 911... All you need is the bleached highlights, red braces & pinstripe suit for that full-on 1989 city wideboy look...

Black - especially, in my somewhat biased opinion, without bodykit - is classier, more classic, more timeless. It shows the basic _right_ness of the c900 hatch shape. FFS, it's an early '70s design. But it still looks RIGHT 35 years later.

Do you reckon? I think the 900 looks horribly dated, and genuinely ugly from some angles, from the hockey stick back, in any guise. The 99's a waay better looking car. I would never even have considered buying one if I hadn't had a ride in Bawheids. I love them despite the way they look from some angles. I'm not the only one am I? ;oops:

Do you reckon?

I do indood.

I think the 900 looks horribly dated, and genuinely ugly from some angles, from the hockey stick back, in any guise. The 99's a waay better looking car.

Interesting. To my eyes, the 99 is a MUCH more dated design - and the minor changes to turn it into the 900 are one of the absolute classic "How Tos" for a facelift, especially when you consider how incredibly minor the changes were to the back of the 3- and 5-dr. The 9000's another good example - the original, vs the low-nose CS, especially at the front. I never did like the rear of the CS much.

I'm not saying you could shove it into a car park of modern stuff and nobody'd guess it was an older car - of course they would - but it doesn't look _dated_ in the same way as so many of it's contemporaries - even their replacements. But that's mainly minor detailing - flush-glaze the shape and remove the gutters, and it'd stand up well.

The interior, otoh, especially the dash, is _badly_ dated. It was dated in the mid-80s. Again, though, nowhere near as much so as that of the 99.

Gawd alone knows how Saab built a reputation for build quality despite that glovebox lid fit...

Albert Trout

Just shows you. I think the 900 looks like a 99 with an overly long rear grafted on the back. Personally, I don't think Saab have got a rear-end right since the 99 and don't say outside this forum but the 9000's a barge no matter what age it is.

It will never look dated in the way that a lot of cars do because it didn't follow any design trend, but I can think of loads of 80's cars that to my eye look as good or better than the 900 today.

As a fellow 80's refugee I don't think we need discuss modern cars and their unsightly, formulaic blandness :cheesy:

$600?!?! where'd you find one looking like that for $600? Please tell me theres more wrong with it than meets the eye... else I got SCREWED

haha. heres the short version about the car... Had a vaccum leak, wouldnt idle, so the PO parked it, and it sat for 4 yrs! He had another one just like it, so he just didnt mess with it. C'mon - parked for four yrs because of vac. leak?!?
Then, he said the car wouldnt even start, blah blah - guess what - I put a brand new battery in it (after towing home) and she fired up like she had never been shut off before! Runs like an absolute dream (with 89k miles). He had a shorted out battery in it, and it cause the electronics to go haywire when turing the ignition on - so I THINK thats why he didnt mess with it. But DUH - check to see if the battery is bad before you go selling a car!!!
Only problem with sitting for 4yrs is that the clutch is inoperable, the slave seals corroded - thus, no pressure in the clutch - its undergoing a clutch install this week. completely rust free, low mileage, TURBO in great shape, no issues whatsoever. Got extremely lucky, especially since all it took to get the motor running was some vac.lines, and a battery. Interior is perfect, headliner is up and all there. Im smitten on this car, it was MEANT to be mine!

FWIW, I've loved all 4 of my 99's, most my '74 99 EMS. Wish I could afford to restore it..

The problem with 99's style, and looking "dated" when comparing to existing cars, is the recent progression to low and wide. While the 99 under some conditions can be viewed as wide, it's still a very tall and boxy look. And due to design, there's not a LOT of room to lower them.

I love the look of the 99's, and was dismayed at the 99 'sedan-back' thinking it looked ugly, and spoiled a good design.

However, a 900, especially the later ones with the smooth headlights, body kit, and a few mm of lowering (like the SPG) especially with something like 16" super-aeros, looks very foreign and current. Sleek, clearly defined lines, and aggressive.

Course that's just my opinion..

Don't get me wrong, from the hockey stick forward I like the look and from front on it doesn't look in the least bit dated to me, especially with 16's and chunky tyres. It's just that big overhang at the back. I've got an airflow kit and whaletail and in my eyes thats the best the rear can look, in my completely unbiased opinion of course :D

i never noticed how much it overhangs. why'd they do that? to keep closer to 50/50 (f/r) weight distribution?

oh yeah, and i'm one of those guys that thinks, without the spoiler and airflow kit, the rear looks down-right hideous. i don't take any pictures of my car from the back. it's terrible. just my opinion though.

No, it's simply to give a big boot without a HUGE wheelbase - which'd make the whole rear quarter look wrong.

have they been refurbed.?
I have a set of Super Aeros I want to strip & paint -
any details of how you got them to that state would be good.

Nope never had the super aeros refurbed... they are in the same condition as when I first got them.... I just use a really good clay bar on them every 6 months, then a finish sealer with a carnuba wax like P21S. I did purchase new centre caps for them a few years back. The rims I bought from a friend here who had them on his 9000 Aero – luckily they were well maintained by him too.

You can get rims refinished quite cheaply, just look around to see what is in your neighbourhood. Good luck!

And one more for good measure...

Spent most of the weekend detailing my newly acquired '89 900S. Single stage paint rocks. This was the first time working extensively with this type of paint... Much easier to work with than modern clear-coats.... swirls go away easier...no need to polish in mortal fear of removing too much clear. The only downside is that your polishing/compounding pads turn the color of your paint.

Anyone who says dual stage paints are glossier needs to come see my car in person. Also, try neglecting a it for a while and see how ugly clear coat failure looks. Nothing can be done except for a repaint.

The SS paint on my car has been semi-neglected since God knows when...but when I'm done with my car, it'll look like it came right out of a showroom.

I'm not even close to done yet. Still need to do something about the faded bumpers, rejuvenate the trim, and a lot of little details here and there. I went through about 3 claybars, gallons of vinegar (for the waterspots), blackened several compounding pads and gave my vacuum a nice workout. Still need a few more weekends to get the car looking how I want it to look...

And here's my bunch:

My daughter's car, caught in an awkward moment, in the middle of a buttock transplant:

This is the original paint, and it isn't even polished.

In Utah:

And in Florida, with wild turkeys:

Now she's on a ship, bound for Hamburg. Next spring, she'll have Norwegian plates.

Jorgen,

tell me how you`ve registered the car with US plates on your name as I understand you drove it across the country and then put onto the ship.
Or you had driven it while registered on previous owner ...?

I`d like one day to do the same, get a nice car on West coast and drive it all the way to East cost ... but was told that would be problematic to get car registers on foreigner ...

Nice collection though!

Its scary how rusty it was in unseen places!!! :o

Btw this was a rusty poverty-spec 8v carb dressed to look like a turbo, not actually anything desirable! :p This one died to donate its wheelarches to a 99 Turbo. Check your floors and bulkheads before its too late people!

Here is mine, photo'd last winter.
1990 SPG, 240,000kms. I've had her since 2005.
I tore off the trim, most likely from a snowbank, but luckily I found it. The car has been broken into, so the pass door has no lock, just a hole and the fuel filler neck is broken, so no cover.
Just purchased most of what I need to get her looking good again.:D

Here is my 86 8v NA 5speed 4door as I was prepping to bring it home.
It had been sitting behind the pictured shed for 7 years.
6 hours of prepping and she drove home 90 miles at 65mph.
The price was right - remove it and I will give you the title.
Now I am in the process of making it a daily driver.

The 99 had to be pulled home, it was also behind the shed, but only sat for 4 years. Darn thought little car, it has over 300,000 on it. The guy bought it new in 78 and drove it everyday.
It unfortunately is parts - 8v NA 4speed.

Thanks.

1) We paid the seller USD 150 to store the car for 2 months in a dry garage and extend her registration for the necessary amount of time, until we could make the travel arrangements.

2) The seller signed the original title over to my wife, and sent it to us.

3) We showed the title to the Motor Vehicles Department and bought a "one trip pass" for something like USD17. The pass is a simple document that you can fill in yourself with what trip you want to make. We filled it in with an unusually long trip: LA to Bunswick, GA. Apparently, this is perfectly legal. My wife talked a LOT to the MVD people about it on beforehand.

4) In order to get the "one trip pass", you also need to show proof of insurance.

5) We went over to the seller, stuck the pass to the inside of the windshield, got the keys, and drove off.

6) Shipping was arranged by E.Harms in New Jersey. I can recommend them warmly, having used them twice.

I'm not sure this recipe would work for you, since we had an advantage: My wife is a US citizen has an American driver's license, and has kept a registered address in Connecticut after she moved to Norway 6 years ago.

Forgive me for one more car picture, this time with my wife, at sunset, in Death Valley:

The car, however, was never registered in her name while we drove it: It was on a temporary permit (the "one-trip-pass"). Talk with the MVD about it ahead of time. If they say NO, then you have to work out something with the seller, and maybe a formal car rental agreement. You're allowed to drive someone else's car, on their insurance even, if they allow it.

The arrangements in Brunswick, GA were smooth. We'd got the papers ahead of time, showed them at the port, and simply left the car with the shipper's local agent, took a taxi to Savannah airport, and flew home.

Brunswick is a good destination for such a trip. Apparently, the car ships cross the Atlantic from Hamburg to Canada, and then proceed down the East Coast, stopping in several ports before they turn due east again after Brunswick. On the European side, they also stop in several ports. One of these is Amsterdam, which should suit you well.

The actual transatlantic shipping cost is under USD1000.

E. Harms wanted USD 2000 extra for picking up the car in LA. We found other shippers which were willing to take it across America for USD 1000, but you probably won't get it cheaper than that. The road trip was unforgettable.

Ok since it has been over two years since i posted some pics i thought i'd post some newer ones. Cosmetically not much has changed i guess, apart from the new top-tint screen, bumpe cut out for fmic and whaletail.

Under the skin is different though - TD04 turbo, FMIC, 3.8bar fpr, Abbott Racing ECU (fuel), modified APC, Bilsteins etc etc.

Anyway some pics taken at this weekends Norse day at the Ace Cafe.

Not a great pic but the only one I've got at the moment 8V Turbo paid £300 for it didn't take me that long to get used to driving LHD either most people think it's horrible driving on the left in a LHD but they've never tried it lol :cheesy:

Awesome, awesome, and awesome! (hey, I'm a California dude).

JKlave, I love your Utah and turkey shots! I remember reading about your purchase and road trip while doing a search on this car. This was well before I finally got my hands on my very own c900....and now that I own one, I can't imagine a better car with which to do a cross-country road trip!

Thanks. It was absolutely amazing. If you can, set aside a minimum of 14 days. We had 8, which meant that we had to drive pretty long days and pretty fast for much of the time. Highways are noisy, especially in a 'vert at high speeds. The one thing I enjoyed when we had to go fast, was how rock steady the car was. I could let go both hands from the steering-wheel as we were approaching an 18-wheeler from behind, and let the car steer itself right through the slipstream and turbulence. Amazing.

Our route was from LA via San Diego (where we had to attend a conference), Zion National Park in Utah, Grand Canyon (both North and South Rim), Dallas, Vicksburg, Mobile and Orlando to Brunswick. The route was fine, and would have been even better if we'd had time to slip down to the Big Bend area in Southern Texas and drive along the Rio Grande for a while.

The best parts were when we could keep the speed down, enjoy the scenery, and go hiking at the interesting spots. We met a lot of very nice people. Americans are amazingly friendly.

We had one accident and a near miss on the way.

The near miss was an overloaded truck that blew a tire right in front of us on the highway. The noise was stunning, and there was a cloud of dust that looked, at first, like smoke. Luckily, we had room to take evasive action.

The accident was a full-grown deer that crossed the road in front of us. We hit him pretty hard, ... but there wasn't a mark on the car. Not even a little dent, like the ones my first Saab got when it threw a moose over its roof. Amazing.

... and then there was the night when the fog got denser and denser, except it wasn't fog, but smoke, and it got deep reddish orange from something up ahead, and it was so hard to breathe we really didn't want to stop, and there was nowhere to make a U-turn. Then it thinned and disappeared.

I'm digressing.

Good night!
