A case is how many bottles?....

Costco has Chevron Dexron III, a case of 12 bottles (one quart each), for $17.50~ or so after 8.25% California tax.

2002 and up models need the 3309 due to the revised tranny.

True, I got this from a SAAB document:

"The fluid used in this transmission system is a completely new type due to the increased stress caused by the slipping lock-up. The fluid is designated JWS 3309, (Aisin-AW spec). JWS 3309 is a mineral-based ATF with unique additives, high coefficient of friction and very high resistance to thermal oxidation. This fluid is factory standard on model -02 cars and applies also to 9-3 (4-speed aut.). JWS 3309 will mix with Dexron II and III. (JWS 3309 is therefore "backwards compatible" but will not provide any advantages over standard fluid in earlier 4-speed automatic transmissions. However, only JWS 3309 is to be used in Aisin AW 33/5 and no other fluid.)"

Man the only bad thing about having a 2002+ is not being able to rely on this forum for some information

Thanks for the heads up...the Dexron III is coming out soon!...

So, that means 02 and up should use 3309. Earlier cans can just use Dexron III, right?

Yep, I have "Proline" Dex III from PepBoys that cost me a handsome sum of $5 or something like that. It runs like a dream!

My guess is that the "burnt smell" many have reported is the result of incorrectly using Dextron III in the very demanding 5-speed automatic transmission.

Looks as if the 3309 were specially formulated to handle the extreme temperatures of the 5-speed automatic box.

A burnt smell is very common in used up Dex III, don't know about the 3309. From what I've read, the 3309 has more friction modifiers to handle the additional stresses of the lock-up converter.

OK, guys all I understood that for my 02 9-5 saab I need 3309 mineral based ATF, period. But where to get it at resonable parice, please don't mention dealer. Will the following ATF will do? it seems OK but I don't know if it is mineral based or not.

So, I can use mobile 3309 safely for my 02 9-5 linear. Then why the saab 3309 is around $18 per quarts? I know that is mineral based but I don't if mobile 3309 is mineral based or not. Here I found something good about mobile 3309 which specifies saab. Please reconfirm me if I can simply user mobile 3309 safely

I can never find 3309 locally and the dealer is 30 miles away. I just use Toyota Type IV which is basically the same AT fluid as 3309. Toyota uses the same Aisan Warner tranny as the 2002+ 9-5.

Hi guys, i have a 2001 auto.
I just did a fluid change and used the GM approved Mobil Dexron VI.
I read on the forum that GM renamed it's Dexron III to Dexron VI because of copyright laws......?

My question is, did i use the right atf or should i have used Dexron III?
The bottle said it met 2006 spec and was ok for older transmissions.

Well, all i know that from 02+ they need Saab 3309 but below that SAAB recommend to use Texaco Texamatic Dexon III mineral based (must), any synthetic gonna harm the transmission. Is that a mineral based what you used?

All,

I just saw authentic SAAB 3309 here and the price seems OK , a lil bit higher than mobil atf 3309 but not crazy like dealers.

Yup, I paid $ 44/case way back! Just used the last 3.5 bottles over the weekend.

The 3309 must be a better mix than the Dex III. While changing the fluids, it still had the "fresh" redish color with no burnt smell.

Just checked the Mobil website and found this:

"Mobil Dexron-VI ATF provides warranty protection for 2006 and newer GM vehicles. It is also for improved performance in 2005 and earlier GM vehicles, wherever DEXRON is specified."

Still looking into it thou.....

Should be just fine. Dex-VI is the replacement for no-longer-available Dex-III.

Got a response from ExxonMobil: "
A DexronVI approved ATF can be utilized for DexronIII recommended transmissions."
