my mom has a 2000 9-3 convertible and the stereo system is pretty bad. since the front is the same as my 9-3 5-door, I know what to do up there. but the rear is where need advice. I was wondering what size the rear speakers are and how you get to them. have any of you messed with the audio of a drop-top? any advice would be great. thanks!

thanks for the info, do you have any pics of the install or tips on how to install them? that's kinda sad that they are 6.5s cuz they have crappy bass for 6.5s.

I've been toying with the idea of replacing the rears in our convertible, but I am convinced that if I put a decent pair of door speakers in, then the need would not arise. Nothing like sitting on the fence, and doing nothing though, is there? :D

yeah, adding components in the doors of my 9-3 was a night to day transformation in sound over those small 3.5s. my mom is not real into tuning and upgrades, so I don't know how much she'd let me do. but what I'd like to do is put Alpine Type-S components in the front, some Infinity Reference 6.5 coaxials in the back, an Alpine CDA-9847 in the dash, and a Polk Momo 8in sub in a sealed enclosure with a JL e1200 in the trunk. heh, but my mom would never go for it and I'd rather put that kind of money into my own car :P but I'd atleast like to give her a speaker upgrade. I already have infinity 3.5s from my car to put in, so a nice set of 6.5s would be good to complete the system.

Iam sorry for digging out that topic, but actually am wondering if the speaker sizes also apply to NG900 convertibles?

I have a strange feeling that front door speakers are 5,25", not 6,5".
Therefore just wanted to confirm with you guys, before I strip my car apart, which I do not want to do while waiting for the speakers to arrive.

Could you confirm the sizes for doors and the back of NG900 convertible, please.

Regards

Reviving an old thread for this is savvy - it shows you bothered to search first. Welcome to SC sirlukas the searcher.

The front speakers ARE 6.5" mounted on 1" plastic spacer/mounting brackets. If your car did not come with front door speakers (i.e. it was not an SE) then you do not have the mounting brackets or the wiring or the front amp that drives them. The factory amp is a low pass amp feeding a bass signal only to the door speakers. The factory headunit drives the dash 3.5" speakers. If you have door speakers, and all you want to do is upgrade them and not the amplifier, then you need mid-bass only units, of the highest sensitivity you can find, to make the most of the rather pedestrian wattage the factory amp generates. Anything 4 ohm and 90 dB sensitivity or better will work extremely well.

Hi,

Thanks for the swift reply.

I have bought an after market Head Unit Sony MEX-1GP (http://www.caraudiocentre.co.uk/product_m-sony-mex-1gp_p-21678.htm) and all I want to do is to have a very decent sound, quality is the issue, not power.

My Saab is an 'S' version, therefore no speakers in the doors.

I would appreciate some links to the mounting brackets you are talking about and maybe some decent recommended wires.

I want to change the speakers at the back as well, so hints from users that have done it before would be much appreciated.

Regards,
Lukasz

BTW: Did I tell you that I Love my Saab?

Need time to find your links for you. There is a guide for convertible stereo upgrade with good illustrations on how to remove the rear panels to access the speaker brackets. As for the door brackets - they are essentially proprietary to Saab as they are plastic half-baskets. But the part that concerns you are the one inch spacing and mounting points. Each bracket has three screws for securing it to the metal of the door. These go through tabs on the periphery of the outer diameter of the bracket/spacer/ring. You can source 1" spacer rings, but I do not know how you will go about mounting them to the door, unless you can pass longer screws through the speakers and the spacers, directly into holes you drill into the door metal. I'll look for your link. Removal of the back panels is quite simple and can be accomplished in about 15 minutes.

Here is your link for upgrading the convertible stereo (http://particlesalad.com/saab/). The link can be found any time by accessing Munki's excellent NG 900 site (http://www.saabcentral.com/~munki/technical/audio/index.htm). You can try to mount the door speakers as shown in this guide, but if you go out and get spacer rings and make them work, you will have a much nicer installation.

Sakes alive. YOU can buy Saab door speaker mounts here (http://www.nexxia.co.uk/Speaker_adaptors/saab.htm) for the sum of 13.75 pounds sterling. These are specifically for 9-3 and I am not absolutely certain they work in NG. (I say that based upon comparison of the picture of the spacer as compared to the pictures in the installation guide to which I am linking you).

Audio Experts, please advise:

1. Front doors: In Phase XT62ND (http://www.caraudiocentre.co.uk/product_m-in-phase-xt62nd_p-22881.htm) £60
2. Back side panels: In Phase XT62ND (http://www.caraudiocentre.co.uk/product_m-in-phase-xt62nd_p-22881.htm) £60
3. Dashboard: In Phase XT32 (http://www.caraudiocentre.co.uk/product_m-in-phase-xt32_p-21983.htm) £30
4. Little Helper: Alpine SWD 1600 Ultra (http://www.caraudiocentre.co.uk/product_m-alpine-swd-1600_p-21071.htm) £100

Considering, I do not want to go crazy on my tight budget, please tell me if such configuration is ok, or if I could do better in a similar price range?

My Head Unit is Sony MEX-1GP (http://www.caraudiocentre.co.uk/product_m-sony-mex-1gp_p-21678.htm), that I think is brilliant.

The only thing I need, is a 2-way amplifier to drive door speakers in my Vertie.
Could you advice on that as well, what to go for (not too expensive) and where to fit it in a Vert :)

All opinions are much appreciated.

Regards!
