: gear ratios?

Hi everyone. Just got an '88 9000 Turbo today, 5-speed. Until I get the speedometer working (waiting on a part), it would be nice to know the gear ratios so that I can plug them into one of the online calculators and get a close estimate of what speed I'm travelling at various rpm in each gear. Anyone have this info?

I was told that 3k rpm is 15, 30, 45, & 60 mph in 1st through 4th gears but I'm more interested in knowing what 3500 or 4000 in 5th is so I don't get a very expensive speeding ticket here in California, ha!

Thanks,

Rich

Based on the haynes manual specs with this data put into the quaife software it comes out like this :

Gearbox:- SAAB 9000 T
Tyre:- Michelin all patterns 205/55 x 15
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Top Gear gives 22.790 MPH/1000 RPM and a top speed of 79.766 MPH at 3500 RPM

Engine speeds in top gear:-
30 MPH = 1316 RPM 40 MPH = 1755 RPM 50 MPH = 2194 RPM 60 MPH = 2633 RPM
70 MPH = 3071 RPM 80 MPH = 3510 RPM 90 MPH = 3949 RPM 100 MPH = 4388 RPM

Top Speed in 1 gear = 16.387 MPH
And changes into 2 gear at 1861 RPM dropping 1639 RPM
Top Speed in 2 gear = 30.819 MPH
And changes into 3 gear at 2347 RPM dropping 1153 RPM
Top Speed in 3 gear = 45.967 MPH
And changes into 4 gear at 2521 RPM dropping 979 RPM
Top Speed in 4 gear = 63.813 MPH
And changes into 5 gear at 2800 RPM dropping 700 RPM
Top Speed in 5 gear = 79.766 MPH
************************************************** ****************************************

and at 4000 RPM

Gearbox:- SAAB 9000 T
Tyre:- Michelin all patterns 205/55 x 15
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Top Gear gives 22.790 MPH/1000 RPM and a top speed of 91.161 MPH at 4000 RPM

Engine speeds in top gear:-
30 MPH = 1316 RPM 40 MPH = 1755 RPM 50 MPH = 2194 RPM 60 MPH = 2633 RPM
70 MPH = 3071 RPM 80 MPH = 3510 RPM 90 MPH = 3949 RPM 100 MPH = 4388 RPM

Top Speed in 1 gear = 18.728 MPH
And changes into 2 gear at 2127 RPM dropping 1873 RPM
Top Speed in 2 gear = 35.221 MPH
And changes into 3 gear at 2682 RPM dropping 1318 RPM
Top Speed in 3 gear = 52.534 MPH
And changes into 4 gear at 2881 RPM dropping 1119 RPM
Top Speed in 4 gear = 72.929 MPH
And changes into 5 gear at 3200 RPM dropping 800 RPM
Top Speed in 5 gear = 91.161 MPH
************************************************** ****************************************

That's based on ratios of 3.31/1.76/1.18/.85/.68 and a final drive of 4.45

Thats on a uk spec std 9kT

Thanks Damo. That will help.

Wonder what they mean by "top speed" though. Those speeds are no where near the redline, ha!

Hi richstephens,

The top speed bit is for that rpm ie 3500 or 4000.

If you want the proggy you can d/load it from :

http://www.quaife.co.uk/downloads/QSpeedCalc.exe

Have fun
