Look for any discoloration, however slight, of the filter material, any eveidence of mounting or drop-in (rubbing on "frame"), smell it - should smell new!Did it come in a sealed OEM box?

it came in a "box", a tattered Saab box.

Doesn't look used, its probably just been hanging around a shop/garage. How much did you pay for it?

Doesn't look used to me, either.

The thought of buying a used oil filter is just hilarious to me. Only on ebay would such a thing even be possible. I'm going to try and sell my oil filter after the next change just for ****s and giggles. :cheesy:
That doesn't look used though, just give it a smell. If it's used it will reak of oil, if it's new it'll smell a little like paper.
ok thanks guys.
as for the price... i paid 4.99 for it + 5 dollars for shipping.
good price?

They are 6.50 on genuinesaab.com and im sure not too much more at the stealer...but i dont use em anyways....gotta love the fram oil filters. ive used them for as long as i can remember and a filter is a filter. i know that my local parts shop always stocks them, and ive only seen one time when the row wasnt full, and it was only missing one filter....i guess i am the only saab driver that runs the fram in my town.

I'm hestitant to use Fram after I realized that my saab and my mom's v6 camry use the same fram filter. Plus that grip stuff just bubbles and distintigrates from the heat. Don't know about using saab filters though, can't be too much different.

Thats because the Fram filters are not model specific, its a case of they have the same thread size therefore they are suitable. :o Bottom line with Saab OE filters is they are so cheap its a false economy to buy a pattern filter.

Dudes I'm like totally out of it - I thought he was talking about an aftermarket air filter. ;oops:
So I take back all my bizarre, out of context suggestions.

Filter is a filter? Disghusting.
Frams all have cardboard internals and cheap valves. I've taken several apart myself. I don't touch fram anymore. My experinces with the black "rough" grip have been the same as the above mentioning.

I used a saab filter from the dealer for the first oil change I did. Since then I've been using Mann oil filter as I can get them at a trade price through my brother.
They are shorter than the saab filter (about 2/3 the size of a saab oil filter). I've read that Mann filters are good and that they pack alot of filtering medium for its size compared to other larger filters.
Any comments, experiance from others about Mann?
Cheers:D
Never heard of Mann Shiston, are they specific to Australia?

Hey Guys, on all my cars where I use Mobil 1 synthetic, I have always used the Mobil 1 oil filters. They are more expensive, $11-$12 is this a good oil filter for the Saab 9-5 Aero or should I stick with the Saab oil filter? I've always read that Mobil 1 fileter are superior in quality?

Personally I'd stick with Saab, but you got the right oil ;)

I just read through some of the filter info, and the Mobil filter is a good one, expensive but good. But I'll never use a orange fram again, I'm putting a Saab filter on my car today, even though it's not time for an oil change.
ok thanks guys.

When you just mentioned buying oil filter from e-bay - I wondered why would anyone do that? Saving may be $5 is not worth the e-bay hassle.
Now it turns out you didn't even save anything. I'm buying this stuff here (http://www.thesaabsite.com/95/95filters.htm).
Oil filter is $5.75 + $4.70 US delivery (or you may buy more different stuff and save on delivery) - basically same prise you've payed, but guaranteed new and fresh.

What is recommended (by everyone here) oil change interval if using synthetic oil?

No more than 6,000 miles between changes ;)
Apparently this is overkill, but hey makes me feel good :p

Bob, also get the ATF changed annually, its a very easy and cheap drain and refil process although it doesnt completely drain the ATF it will keep it very healthy, and a very wise man said, never overfill the ATF ;)

Thanks Chris - was planning to do the oil change at or before 6k but will gladly do ATF annually per your recommendation...

No Kermit, Mann are made in germany and are well know in Europe (I'm suprised you've never heard of them). You have know where to find them cause they aren't available in local automotive shops here. You have to goto specialty places where they stock european car parts.
Common local filters here in australia are made by Repco or Valvoline which neither one of them make an oil/air filter for Saab. Even if they did I would still go for the Mann or Saab filter anyway as I feel they are superior.

The blind faith a lot of you have in the Saab filter disturbs me a little. It's probably made by some other company for Saab.

It probably is...but at least its made specifically for Saab and not a one filter fits all application.
Ah Shiston, i presume you mean the truck manufacturer Mann? I didn't know they had their fingers in the parts pie. ;)

Sorry if my ignorance is showing - ATF? ?
ATF = Automatic Transmission Fluid :cheesy:

Except it's probably a one filter fits all with Saab painted on it. I just have to figure out what brand makes it.
Virtually all Saabs run the same filter. As i said why pay £5-6 for a pattern filter, when you can pay £3.50 for a Saab one. :cheesy: There's one fella on ebay over here who sells a box of 12 Saab filters for £25. :o

Except here I can get a really good pattern filter (Puralator Pureone, mmmm synthetic) for $6 + tax (6%) or pay $6.50 + shipping for a Saab one. Don't know how much it would cost at the dealer, but I'm sure it would make me cry.
I still feel much better having got that rubbish Fram filter off. :x
The filters even at a main stealer are still very reasonable, its the electrics that need a remortgage. ;)

I've been pondering the oil filter thing all day and have stumpled upon an interesting idea. I bought oil filters for the other two cars with fram filters on them, a V6 camry (same filter as the saab) and I6 Wrangler. Here are the two filters side by side.

The threads are exactly the same and the gaskets are the same. Why not use the bigger filter on our saabs? A larger filter element will flow better and take longer to clog so it'll help fight oil sludging. Any thoughts on this idea?

I think the question and its answer have been given several times now:
Q. What oil filter do you recommend?
A. The genuine saab one.
My bad..there's only 1 N .:cheesy:

Inclusion of a larger filter into the system will increase the overall volume of the system. So technically you will need more oil to do the same job in the system.
Notice I said "technically", meaning that the difference may be miniscule but there is a difference nonetheless.
So kick me out if I answer again - use the real deal SAAB filter!
