Can anyone tell me why the Engine Warning Light has come on. The Car is an R Reg Saab 9-5, 2.3l petrol automatic SE. The engine no longer starts firs time, occasionally stalls at low revs and idles at 2000 RPM.

Can I fix the problem or do I have to visit a dealer?
Is there any danger in continuing to drive the car in its current state?

Unfortunatly you can't tell whats caused the engine light ot come on without visiting a dealer and having the ECU diagnosed, but from your symptoms it does rather sound like it could be a throttle body problem, and I'm afraid it will not a cheap bill to fix!
One thing you could try is, remove fuse 17 for 10 seconds or so, this will reset the ECU, and may fix your problem, unless its a permanent fault.
If the car has gone into limp home... does the pedal feel heavy and low performance, you will need to see a dealer to reset the limp home solenoid.
