The Biggest Subaru Ever
Dan Lienert (javascript:fdcBioWindow('danlienert')) Subaru is preparing to introduce its biggest vehicle ever, the seven-passenger B9 Tribeca sport utility vehicle (SUV). The car will go on sale in June with a base price in the low $30,000s.

The Tribeca is named for the Manhattan neighborhood abutting downtown, Chinatown and Soho; it is an abbreviation of "Triangle Below Canal Street."

The name is designed to sound cosmopolitan, as Subaru is trying to becoming more upscale. General Motors (nyse: GM ( - news ( - people (, which has a strategic alliance with the Japanese manufacturer, seems to want the vehicle to be not just urbane, but international. According to Automotive News, GM is planning to have its Saab subsidiary produce a version of the car.

In a phone interview on Friday, a Saab spokesperson said the company "would like to" build such a seven-passenger vehicle and is "seriously studying it." Saab's new 9-2X wagon is based on Subaru's Impreza.

As a Saab, the vehicle would certainly not have the same name, and we wonder how "B9" slipped by the censors in the first place, considering how close it sounds to "benign." Actually, the "B" stands for "boxer"--the type of engine in the Tribeca and every other Subaru. In such a power plant, which is also known as a flat engine, the cylinders oppose each other horizontally. The Tribeca will use a 3.0-liter, six-cylinder boxer engine with 250 hp.

Forbes Fact

All Subarus have boxer engines, but they also have another feature in common: all-wheel drive. Naturally, the B9 Tribeca will have this kind of layout.
