You could rebuild parts in the trans that are prone to breaking, or that have broken. Then you could cryo treat the entire gearbox. Evans performance apparently will cryo treat an entire trans for $295(according to the price list they sent me). You could also throw in some isotropic superfinishing or what they refer to as "REM" to decrease friction. This bumps the price up to $625 to include both cryo and REM.

How much power do you have?

Aside from buying a transmission and having it cryo'd, is there a manufacturer who makes better transmissions for a Saab 900 16v turbo? Mine isnt dead but I would like to save myself some headache if it does go.

If someone does make one... would it be better than cryoing the one I have NOW or buying a better replacement?

The pinion bearing is weak on all of them, but was strengthened on later cars from 1990 onwards. However, this was at the expense of the casing, so the casing is more prone to cracking on later cars. The linkage can bend on all models. Synchros fail. There's some info on it on http://www.twinsaabs.com/. The gearbox basically wasn't designed for 5 gears so there's no room to strengthen anything. You could try getting a 4 speed from a 99 from the late 70's, as these are stronger. Jorgen Eriksson also makes strengthened 'chillcast' 4 speed boxes which will only set you back a few thousand dollars. Do a search for details. Gearbox replacement in the UK with a standard refurbished one will cost you the equivalent of about $1100. You have to nurse them - shift slowly, never use full boost in the lower gears, double declutch if it feels happier, change the oil, balance your revs if changing down by feathering the gas - if you abuse them they will go wrong, that's just how it is.

dont they fail when the case flexes and put an uneven load on the gears?Cryo-treating the case could be pretty good. Then you could shot peen the gearset.
