my old 87 had two metal tounges on the inside of the hatch just at the bottom line of the window
what are they for?

Wow! It's going back a bit, but I remember those on my '87 too. I always assumed they were to prevent the parcel shelf from rattling.

I thought along those lines and eventually bent them down
they still didnt meet the parcel shelf because the gap between the shelf and tailgate was too big

The two metal tongues to which you're referring are indeed there to apply pressure to the parcel shelf when the hatch is closed. Have had a '92 9000 since new, and have observed that the distance between the tongues and the parcel shelf has increased over the years. Partly due to the parcel shelf starting to sag, and partly due to (don't ask me how it happens, though) the tongues bending a bit over time. If you're not the original owner, could be the case that the previous owner removed the parcel shelf for transporting something bulky in back, and the tongues were bent upward/back in the process. This might explain why the distance between the end of the tongues and the back end of the parcel shelf is too great. Take a look and the tongues, and the condition of your parcel shelf. With a bit of muscle, you can rebend the tongues back into form.

I to have have a 91 9000 hatch and tried just that,as in bending them into shape again but nope!! they still don't reach,why not :evil: ????.
Infact when I was bending them I heard a crack I take it,it was the metal of the brackets themselves because the window is ok (thank god!!)

when I bent mine down the piant flaked off so they had never been in a position to hold the shelf down from new

:lol: as the shelf is for parcels ( parcel shelf) could these be letter holders :D
