: Tire & Wheel upgrade for '01 9-5 Aero
Hi guys.
I have recently upgraded my Aero with an ECU upgrade & now feel I need a bit more traction. I dont want to overdo the look of the car & was wobdering if anyone knew how wide I can go. 225/45/17 currently, can I got up to 235 / 245 if I upgraded the wheels.
Thanks all.
XAAMOTTOMAAX 28-05-04, 03:25 PM If you have a 5 speed manual transmission, the best thing you can do to gain traction is to install a limited slip differential. This is not cheap however. Running a 235 series tire should not give you any problems with rubbing but the taller sidewall might be something that makes the car look too tall if the suspension is not lowered slightly (unless you go down from a 45 to a 40). I am not sure about the 245.
MrSmith 08-08-10, 10:17 AM i have 235-45/17's very quiet (no rubbing) but would'nt go any wider or taller
PeriSoft 09-08-10, 01:55 PM I've got 225/45R17s, on 7.5" rims, on my '05 (not sure if the bodywork / suspension is the same on pre-'02s). It's got a ton more grip than the 16" stock tires; turn in snap is enough to frighten the wits out of guys riding shotgun who think they drive aggressively. :D

mt.aero 09-08-10, 02:38 PM I would argue that a good high performance tire will net you more than a lsd.
And tire size is not as important (when talking about a 10mm difference) as its performance rating. So first find a tire that is in the 'high' or 'ultra high' performance summer catagory. Good traction and 'all season' just dont belong in the same sentence.
I run BFG gforce t/a kdw2 235/40-18 and couldnt be happier with the level of grip they offer. I think they look real noice too!

I hope ibbo isn't waiting for the answer to the question he asked more than 6 years ago..

Hahah! You never know though. Now maybe he will get some new tires after running on cords for 6 years.

I would argue that a LSD will get even more from your good tyres though :p

I would like to argue that just for the sake of arguing with you chris, but I dont have a leg to stand on.

What kind of rims are those in the last pic?

"MB rims" - the cheapest-*** ones I could find at DiscountTire. Something like 94 bucks a pop after a discount. They look awesome now (though they're clearly nowhere near the quality of the OEM ones) but I'm reserving judgment until they've survived for a while...
MrSmith 12-08-10, 04:25 PM i cant afford rims  .........yet

a certain guy from a certain day out with a certain 480hp 9-5 informed me that the lsd doesn't help grip at all in a straight line, only on exiting bends/putting power down after slow speed bends.
I was behind him at 100 and he then pulled away, leaving - i kid you not - skid marks on the road. This sparked that conversation, although he was on winter tyres too.

Thats sorta true, assuming that when accelerating in that straight line, both tires had very similar amounts of grip. If you were to turn a little, or hit some gravel or dust with one tire, then the open diff would divert power to that slipping tire quickly, turning your car into a one wheel drive. So basically in real world conditions, the LSD will help in all conditions. There is a reason every good drag car uses a locked/limited slip diff.
