Unless he meant his local, in which case, I can vouch for that. You just wouldn't, trust me...

Apparently, their ISP has changed name-servers without warning. As the change propagates across the internet it should become available again. This is usually quoted as taking "up to 24 hours" but may be less and since it's been down at least all day so far I'd imagine it will be back soon.

It's nice of them to let them know!!, isn't it!!, I can think of other buisineses that pull that kinda stunt, *******'s the lot of them

in fairness these things happen and not always at the decision of the hosting company - unless you are prepared to pay for your own entire system its a risk you have to take.
equally there will be a clause agreed to upon contracting the hosting allowing for reasonable downtime for unseen circumstance.
 luckily our 'magic boxes' havent been naughty for over three years now *gets coat in case fate is listening*

*rhetorical question - not my personal view*

DNS propagation can take upto five days, but is usually complete to mainstream name servers within 24 hours.

axl
12-05-04, 04:55 PM
Not yet it's not Iv'e just tried, still down!

johncc
12-05-04, 05:48 PM
If they've changed name servers, they've changed IP address too or something. Their old IP address is unreachable.

axl
12-05-04, 05:52 PM
What happens now then?, obviously they'll have to get something sorted out.

Fantastic.

Seriously though, I agree with all about the time taken. I'm happy to wait as I spend almost all my time here (must get some actual work done tommorow...

I marvel at the way that the internet works, thanks to the IEEE (I think) organisation that creates it and sorts out all the IP addresses for the world. IP v6 will come soon (or as soon as the world can replace every single bit of hardware we use) and all the problems will be resolved  (anyone notice the pun?)

Ok, sorry, it's late and the posts are getting more long and drawn out.

I'll go now..

IP6 is already here 8)

It's the IETF (http://www.ietf.org/) (Internet Engineering Task Force), ICANN (http://www.icann.org/general/) (Internet Corporation For Assigned Names and Numbers) and IANA (http://www.iana.org/) (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) that are primarily responsible for running bits of the Internet you don't see.

IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) is a professional organisation. It was the US Department of Defense's ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency) that "created" the Internet.

Where Wizards Stay up Late (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0684832674/qid=1084401098/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_10_1/202-8740748-3822240) by Katie Hafner and Matthew Lyon is an excellent book that tells the story of the Internet's creation.

IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) is a professional organisation.
But they're also a standards body. For example, Ethernet is IEEE standard 802.3. It may be the IEEE's control of Ethernet MAC addresses that Greenphotos was thinking of.

IEEE, IETF, ICANN, IANA.

Don't you love the IT industry :cheesy:

(I think I got it wrong in the first place, I think I meant the IETF)

(Currently doing my CCNA - heaven help me!)

Hey Nutcase (Richard) - is it good for you?

Nope  But then blueyonder's email's still up the creek as well. Hasn't worked for 2 days now. I guess expecting them to update their dns lookup thingys or whatever it is is definitely too much to ask!

I've tried to get the IP and get in without the hostname, but the IP I get when I ping it just comes up with a virtual server page.

Bleh!
