A couple of us are hosting a meet in the Thousand Islands
area on June 6th, a one day affair. This location allows
for Toronto members to drive up Sunday morning (2.5 to 3.5
hour drive)

For those that would like to join in, but are more than a 4
hour drive from our location, I will be more than happy to
find some reasonably priced lodging if you are to come a day
early.

**************** SaabCentral Meet DETAILS ****************

Location: Thousand Islands, Ontario
Start time: 10am
Start Location: Thousand Islands Casino

Map Location:

I was thinking that we could do a 1 or 3 hour boat trip
hosted by Gananoque Boat lines. The 3 hour ride costs $11,
however, a vote will decide the length we are to pursue.
The trip drops you off at Boldt Castle that houses the
castle.

If we use the 3 hour boat ride at 1pm, we could settle into
a nice place to eat (my suggestion is the Lobster Trap
eafood Restaurant).

I am open to suggestions.....

I don't want to provide my contact number in this public
forum, but will provide it to every member attending as the
time nears.

Thanks

Use Kingston as your reference point.....as the Thousand Islands is within a 10-15 minute drive from there.

Well needless to say I havn't posted yet but my wife and I are in, she's looking forward to this don't know if I want to bring the kids yet tho. As well as I'm more than likley going to need lodging as for me its close to a 8 hour car ride.. So if there is a camp ground near by that would be perfect. The last camping trip I went on ended up with my cat up a tree my car nearly written off and a close up of a cliff in northern ontario :)

I'm game for the tour. Last time I was at the Castle was in 2000 with the Professional Car Society. It was having a few rooms renovated.

Is there a solid address for the casino? Something I can punch in to yahoo maps (doubt I'll need to)I'll just find the 401 from 81N.

If you look at the map again...you will notice that is is 9 miles West of the bridge. You can miss it...it is a huge eye-sore from the 401. However, you could take the Thousand Island Parkway from the bridge and move on from there....

Here are some specific photographs of locations related to this meet. We will meet in Gananoque, which is 12 km from the U.S. border crossing. This photograph shows I am 14 km from the crossing and 26 from Gananoque. I am right now on the 1000 Islands parkway.

Hey Paul, did you do a "test run" just to get these pic's? lol
Thats funny, cause I was going to suggest one or two of us do the same thing before the meet.
Does the boat tour go from point "A" to "B" where we can get off and "explore" or do we stay on the boat for the entire tour?
My girlfriend finally told me last night she was going to come to the meet with me.....actually I was hoping she wouldn't, but she concluded there will probably be too many single ladies out there so she should come along to "watch my back" Isn't she just great? :x

The boat tour from what I heard gets off at Boldt Castle were we can walk around for a bit and then another one picks us up and we head back to our point of origin.

It will definitely be more interesting when there is mixed company. :-)

I think Boldt Castle is on American soil ... if it's not, then there is one other stop that is ...

Either way, given the state of things today (pardon the pun), I would recommend that everyone bring necessary id (Passport if best, but not manditory).

I was out that way today ... visiting my brother in Prince Edward County, just west of Trenton.
Lovely day for a drive! :o

OK ... we now need to get the Toronto area folks to meet up and all drive to Kingston together.

I suggest a Tim Horton's somewhere ... maybe around 7:30 or so, somewhere along the 401 maybe.
401 and Weston road has a Tim's right there with an exit and entrance and no travelling off the highway required. :cheesy:

Anyone else have any thoughts or ideas?

Okey dokey. Here's my scoop.

Mrs Viscouse & I are driving in from Detroit. Leaving Saturday morning & spend a nice day & night in Toronto.

Sunday morning we'll hook up with yall & Timmy H's & caravan up to the Island.

Groovy.
That's a definite re-confirmation. :cheesy:

We might skip dinner after the boat ride, so we'll get back home at a decent time. Mapquest says 7 hrs from Detroit to Kingston.

Tweek's Turbos
17th May 2004, 01:49 PM
It shouldnt take that long at all. Realistically if you do 74ish. It should only be about 5 hours max. It only took me 8 hrs 30 minutes when I drove out to Grand Rapids, last Nov.

maallen40
20th May 2004, 09:31 PM
Imagine that, dating a lady for 3 years then finding out she won't go on a boat.
We have bungie jumped, rock climbed, kick boxed, survived two nights in Mexico City and drank cow urine ( that's not what was written on the menu ) but she won't go on a boat. Go figure!! I suggested she stay home then, but that didn't go over too well also. And me going off with you guys for the boat trip and leaving her to watch the Saab's also didn't work.
So I will have to "hang" with her while you guys are out on the boat. I could push my luck, but it's that long quiet drive home I have to worry about. lol
Anyway....can't wait.
The last time I did a Saab event was when I lived in Queens New York. It was in 1987. About 10 of us met in Lower Manhatten and drove (raced) out to Atlantic City. What a blast.

Is it confirmed for us to meet at the Timmy's on Weston Road and the 401?

The three-hour boat ride costs $11 and I don't think there is a fee at Boldt Castle when I checked the website. The boats house around 200+ people, so I don't think we should have a problem to fit the 20 of us or so that are probably meeting up for this event.

OK guys, here is the scoop ...

I just checked the CAA website to get driving time from Tim's to the casino ... it show 3 hours and 20 minutes, give or take ...
Now since none of us want to get stopped for speeding, I think we need to move up our start time to 7:00 ...
That way, worst case of the entire trip being at the speed limit, we will be there not much after 10 ...

The Boldt Castle is indeed on the US territory, and we're lucky to have our travel documents expired as of recently ;(. I don't think a driver license alone will do, so we're going to be out of the boat trip.

The following text comes from a website for a Canadian based boat tour company:
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON VISITING BOLDT CASTLE

Visiting Boldt Castle
All passengers are considered to have landed in the United States when the boat stops at Boldt Castle. Passengers who wish to visit Boldt Castle may do so upon US Customs and Immigration approval. Upon return to Canada, Canadian Customs and Immigration will meet all passengers and expect proper documentation even if they didn't leave the boat at Boldt Castle.
The inability to produce proper documentation will prevent you from entering Canada.

Proper Identification
Two pieces of identification are required for Canadian and U.S. Customs and Immigration. American & Canadian Citizens must have 2 or more of the following forms of identification. Passport, citizenship card, birth certificate Photo ID from government (driver license etc.) Permanent resident card

Yes, thanks. I just googled the same warning. Fortunately, there are boat trips that do not stop in US, so I guess I'll be taking one of those while the rest of the crowd is exploring the castle.

Here's a website (http://www.gananoque.com/attractions/index.html) with information about attractions at 1000 Islands in case anyone needs it.

Over the past two years I flew to the U.S. on business with an expired passport several times. I asked a Canadian official about it and was told that an expired passport provides proof of birth/citizenship and was told to make sure I had another form of government issued ID (ie: driver's lic) that was currently valid.

Easy for you to say. The last time we went south to pay friends a visit, it took us an hour on the border at Niagara Falls to convince them that we're not trying to sneak to States illegally and stay there. And all the papers were in order. Maybe it's just my luck, but I'm bringing a little kid with me, and I'm not taking any chances with US immigration officials ;)

I was also born in the Middle East, Kuwait. However, I am a Canadian citizen. I plan on just bringing my passport and I already have a drivers license with me. I would say that it will be based on your comfort level. However, Boldt Castle, if I am not mistaken is on an Island and they know it is a tourist spot with the boat tours, so I don't think you should receive any problems.

However, it is your call.

I am counting 10 Saab Owners from those that posted in this thread. There could be more...not sure. I know that I am going on my own, but I believe most have at least one other companion (daughter, son, wife, husband, girlfriend, boyfriend, whatever the case my be)...

So we could be at 15 people....

It was a fantastic day! :cheesy:

The best part of the day came at the end ...

We had just split into groups going different ways ... Michael and I were heading to the 401 to head to Toronto.
We stopped at a gas station for a minute and were approached by a guy who just got out of an older Audi 90 ...

He asked if we were part of a Saab club ... he had seen us roll into town and was looking for us at the car show that was been held in town ... :o
He sounded very disappointed that we had not been there ...
When I told him that we were part of an on-line club, he asked for the url ... I gave him a SC card! :cheesy:

I couldn't get over that he had been looking for our cars!
What a complement to all 7 of the car owners there today! :cheesy:

More details on the day to follow ... along with lots of pics! 8)

Everyone has heard the expression "It's a small world" ...

Well, it just got a little smaller today. :o

I came back to my desk today to find an SameTime (IBM's instant messaging service) from Dip ... it appears that he and I both work for IBM! :o :cheesy:

He noticed something in one of my posts, put 2 and 2 together, did a search through our "bluepages" and the rest is history!

Isn't life amazing?

Now, what will be even crazier is that I know someone who works at IBM down in Toronto!!!! Wouldn't be just to crazy if one or both of you knew her. She works in business marketing department.

It wouldn't be that crazy ... I worked in Merchandising and Marketing for many years before my current job.
It all depends on what division she works in ... there are a couple in this company.

Thanks to Brunp and anyone else involved in making the day happen, to the weather for not raining on us, to Maallen for adopting us as his family for the auto show, and everyone else for being there and making it a terrific day.

I enjoyed my first Saab event, as did Josée. Just another reason for me to be happy about my recent decision to become a Saab owner!

wow.....very big pictures. It fits perfectly on my screen, but I use the largest resolution that spans my two-monitor setup at work: 3200x1200.

My pictures are soon to come....but I will link using my website as it will be in slide show presentation format. :-)

I guess my tiny post went unnoticed after Scott's pictures. There was a write-up in my gallery (http://photo.platonoff.com/Auto/20040606.Saabs_at_1000_Islands/). Here it goes:

OK....got my two of three slide shows posted at my site. I would post here, but I find it would be easier to see the finished product via slide show presentation on my website. The pictures would be hosted from there anyway:

1000 Islands SaabCentral Meet (http://www.pbrun.net/1000islands_Saab/)
Gananoque Car Show (http://www.pbrun.net/gananoquecarshow/)
Select one of the images to view the commentary and look through the slide show....it is worth it.
