: Enabling RDS on USA 9-5 Aero ?

4th January 2004, 11:55 AM
Hello all,
I am getting a 2001 9-5 Aero this week and have a question about the radio.
I see the European units have RDS built in, is the radio unit basically the same but with different options set ? Could I therefore enable RDS on mine ?

I will be frequenting this board much more now :)
Thanks all.

s3hooligan: RDS (Radio Data System)

Welcome to SaabCentral ...quattrohead...

Your car isn't equipped with OnStar, correct? AFAIK you'll need the satellite connection to take advantage of the RDS service ... I don't think many stations participate, either.

The car does have OnStar but I do not plan to use it.
RDS works on the FM band and is pretty much standard throughout the whole of the world, except USA. Some stations do transmit their ID and time but not much else. In Europe, the radio will keep track of the best signals and auto tune for you, display track information, interupt tape or CD to let you hear traffic information in the area and loads more.

Anyway, can it be enabled on a yank based Saab ?
