Just took the car out for a drive as its loving the cold air in the evenings. On a bit of empty straight road I was experimenting with the acceleration in 2nd and 3rd gears from 30mph. My conclusion is while there is more of an imediate pick up (obviously) in 2nd I cant help but feel I much rarther prefere 3rd gear.
Although it takes it a little while longer to come onto 'full chat' the effect of the longer gear allows you to feel the torque of these motors for longer without having to change inbetween, with the real surge of the turbo coming in at around 3250-3500rpm then it realy takes off.
Wonderd how meny fellow aero owners agree? :cheesy:
P.S Has anyone got a standard aero power/torque graph they could post up as I have yet to see one.
I have done an Abbott Stage 1, and have to say that I find 4th an absolute scream. I still haven't found where the limit is yet, it pulls and pulls until your illegal, then I give up. The torque is still increasing when you have to lift off I'm also not sure if the ECU upgrade has removed the limiter ?
I like to goose it in second a lot. It seems to really climb on it by 3500rpm, by 4k the wheel is twitching around and the tires are chirping...by 5k your passenger has initiated yelping. Pfft family sedan :cheesy:
I agree with the 3500rpm when it comes on song. Took a friend out in it when I first got it and dont think he quite expected it to be as quick as it is.
To be honest I like my quick cars not to look quick if u know what I mean, people who know cars know what they are, but if you have something that looks fast you get a lot of unwanted attention off boy racers/police/theives etc.
i know exactly what your talking about. some kids i knew from school told me to burn out as we pulled away from a light, so i did and the cop across the way pulled them over instead of me. lol made my day
I realy should get out more on a saturday night  but since im not ive done some calulations for the aero speed v gear based on the following ratios and peak power being deliverd at 5500rpm with a 6k redline.
I think i can see why I like 3rd gear as from my figures peak torque occurs quite low at 1900rpm which is about the engine speed when I was going from 3rd which sustains you to 90 odd mph a difference of 60mph.
If you take 2nd you could go from peak torque at 20mph to 60mph an increase in speed of 40mph so while 2nd is more savage lower down you can experince a longer sensation of uninterupted acceleration in 3rd.
2001 Saab 9-5 Aero
5 spd manual
Transmission gear ratio (1st) 3.38
Transmission gear ratio (2nd) 1.76
Transmission gear ratio (3rd) 1.18
Transmission gear ratio (4th) 0.89
Transmission gear ratio (5th) 0.66
Final Drive 4.05
For what its worth. Stage 4 01 Viggen and Stage 3 01 9-5 Aero Wagon.
I have always found the 3rd gear on the Viggen is a monster, best gear from 80km - 150km where it hits the rev red line. That having said the 3rd in the Aero is great but for some reason the 4th and 5th gear is so much more robust than the Viggen. That is the main difference for me. The Viggen flys in 3rd but the Aero pushes better in higher speed 120km - 200km in 4th and 5th.
Provided your hardware matches what the tuner has mapped for there should be no problems and to be honest its very rare for any of the big tuners to provide you with a dodgy map.
There are literally thousands of us using the products with great success.
You might be talking about it coming down off overboost, and generally tunes will limit torque at least in first gear. If not, you're just spinning tires  (well tire)
I've got an auto and that's why I don't use the sport button. I don't want it to kick down into 2nd easily- 3rd gear is superb and when the torque convertor locks up at 55mph blimey.......
For me 40-45mph+ has to be 3rd.
