When my brakes need to be done (which will be some what soon) I was thinking about going with the Sport Ventilated 300mm Rear Brake Kit from Genuine SAAB.
Has anyone done this rear brake upgrade? If yes, do you have any feed back?
I don't have experience with this specific kit, but typically upgrading the rear brakes doesn't affect overall breaking performance. The front brakes do the majority of the work.
I personally wouldn't worry about upgrading the rear brakes until I've done the front. And even then, I wouldn't go with drilled rotors.
theres reviews on their website with someone saying it evens out the braking which makes sense to me. If there was no point to big brakes in the back companies wouldnt even bother putting brakes back there to begin with. I am definitely going to upgrade all my brakes soon.
What car are we talking about here? Your 2006 9-5 ?, ( not sure about the 9-3, you would need to post on that forum, but I am not sure the GS kit is for your 9-5 I thought it as set up for earlier cars...
Yeah I am looking at maybe upgrading the 9-5's rear breaks. Currently on my 06 has solid rear disks 286mm.
As far as for being for only earlier year models I will have to look into that. If that is the case it will make my decision easier.
The only thing I know is when I visited the finger lakes this past summer on the long rolling hills when stopping I felt pulsing in the break pedal. Freaked me out a bit. When cooled off went away. So I did not warp the fronts, but felt like it. Weird how it went away with smoother breaking. Had me think it was the rears that over heated.
Living in MA. I like to run 16 rims with larger profile tires in the winter to handle the snow better and make it up the hill we live on, get to the mountains, and drive i90 and i95 during the winter. So the front brakes that are on there already are the max 308mm for a 16" rim.
The only upgrade for the front that I saw so far was a maptun 308mm multi piston caliper. Then reason set it. I do not track the car, and if I tune the car I will not go above stage 3. So there is no logical need for a front brake upgrade.
So I am still left with a solid rear rotor, and what to do? Be economical and replace the rear with slotted rear solid rotor, or go with ventilated rear rotors?
Now mind you the next item on my to do list is the short shift kit seeing how the break pads I have on the car still have meat left even after 55,000 miles. Which is why I am trying to figure out my plan of attack for the breaks.
So nice sugestion about moving the fronts to the back, but not an option here. Maybe an option for others with my06+ in warmer climates, but not for me.
As far as getting a used part from someone I am very leary. Again we are talking about breaks, and the safety of the people in the car. I would really have to trust the condition of the used parts.
I find it curious there are not others that have done this mod yet. Which may speak volumes. Then again mine is an 06 and still does not need its' break done yet, so maybe this is a first of many thing. Time will tell.
