I was out at the Flying Museum at East Fortune airfield last week and they indicated that one of the Concordes will be displayed there from Easter next year.

Given the interest that Concordes departure engendered on the the boards I thought it might be an idea to have a meet out at the airfield sometime after Easter.

Spouses and weans could be left at Fort Kinnaird Retail Park (shops, cinema, bowling) which is just up the road or even at Ikea if you're really feeling wealthy.

Please add your name if you're interested.

Someone certainly did Skib.

I think we decided to wait until it was light again, or April as it's known in this part of the world.

There was some talk of Knockhill which is one of the mainstream 'trackday' locations but there is also Crail Raceway who will do a private session if there is a group of 10 & do evening sessions too .Led to believe it's quite cheap too .

craigdeluxe
09-01-04, 08:05 PM
Crail is a great day out for a private hire. U basicaly get to do as you wish for an entire day. There are various ways you can set the track up, so faster cars dont always have a big advantage. On the downside the surface is not brilliant. Adviseable not to get too close to the car in front.
As a member of www.ss-r.com I can often be found battering around the track with them, check it out if you are after a friendly club for track days, shows or just meeting up. Besides Im fed up being the only Saab surrounded by Jap crap and German tanks
We had one track evening at Knockhill last summer and it was simply amazing. It really has to be tried.
Cheers

Having spoken to Skib, she has indicated that it might be an idea to have a meet in Scotland in the early part of the year as it's looking increasingly likely that the Concorde meet will become part of the Scottish Weekend Tour.

If folks are interested, put your name down and I'll pull something together.

Off the top of my head it will be a one day event, meet somewhere on the western side of the central belt followed by a tour to Loch Lomondside? However, emphasis will be on the creac and the scenery rather than the drive. I'm thinking Easter weekend but advice will be gratefully received.

I'd be delighted to hear any ideas that anyone wants to put forward.

BillJ
23-01-04, 06:44 PM
Gordy, I'll be up for that.

Well, it looks like the Concorde exhibit won't be open to the public until March 2005 so, until then, I thought we could have another weekend in glorious Scotland.

Last years trip was very successful but there was a suggestion that it involved too much driving. I'd like to give folks an option here do you:

1) Want a trip to the scenic highlands over the Bank Holiday but ending up in the Borders or on Lindisfarne to help those of you travelling from southern Englishland

or

2) Want a weekend out at the Edinburgh Fringe/Festival? ( www.edfringe.com/2004 & www.eif.co.uk refers). This would obviously be less of a driving event and more of a drinking event however, I suspect that it might be more difficult to get accomodated as Edinburgh is bursting at the seams during August.

Let me know your thoughts.

TFatC
02-07-04, 06:14 AM
Option 1 for me please :cheesy:

Seems to me we managed a little bit of drinking on the driving weekends anyway 8) :cheesy:

garry

The Englandshire bank holiday Aug 28th to 30th would be ideal for us. This would also give us time to fix up the 99 in time. :-? ... help  :-? :D

Option 1 for me please...

Mark P
02-07-04, 09:11 AM
I'm definitely up for another Scottishland meet.

Option 1 would be my preference. No doubt we'll find time for a weak shandy or two in the evening(s)

I'm not sure I could manage a whole weekend on the razzle. I'm not a big drinker, see...

Saturbo
02-07-04, 10:09 AM
I'd be keen enough for both (get aff the fence!), but option 1 sounds good. I couldn't make last time - but sounded like great fun 8)

Aviemore direction or further north?

craigdeluxe
02-07-04, 03:00 PM
No not Aviemore! Then I would have to go see my mother again  (she's not that bad really) Option 1 sounds better

Gordy
05-07-04, 09:32 AM
OK, in view of the unanimous vote the trip will be a drive northwards. On day one (Saturday) I propose to follow the same route as before (ie Loch Lomond, Rannoch Moor, Glencoe, Fort William, Inverness). Overnight in Inverness. On day 2 (Sunday) I propose to come down the A9/M90/Edinburgh City Bypass/A1 down to the Lindisfarne area. Overnight there. Day 3 (Monday) we kiss goodbye and head home.

I'm open to suggestions if anyone can offer any improvements.

Proposed timetable:
Saturday 8am: Meet at Strathclyde Park.
Saturday 9am: Meet at Drovers Inn, Loch Lomondside.(Would anyone like me to check if they'll do us breakfast?)
Saturday 10am: Head North. (I've elected to have an early start so that we can fit in a number of stops on the way north to break up the drive a bit. Any suggestions for where we should stop?).
Saturday 6pm(ish): Arrive Inverness.
Saturday evening: Beer anyone?
Sunday 11am: Leave Inverness
Sunday: (I need some suggestions here for stops on the way south. We have a fair distance to travel though so we can't have too many).
Sunday 6pm: Arrive Lindisfarne(ish).
Sunday evening: Beer anyone?
Monday: Goodbye (any suggestions for a tour in the Lindisfarne area).

If anyone fancies a meal in Inverness (before the drinking) would be more than happy to organise again.Indian/ Chinese/ Modern British or whatever anyone wants.

This time we'll try to get a better shaped table wherever we go - but I can't promise any fireworks though.

& Mrs WS would be happy to offer breakfast/brunch to any takers once again, prior to your driving south This time though I'll try to get her to put some butter on the buns, I never realised times were so hard.

Many thanks for the offers WS.

I was actually back for dinner in that Indian restaurant a couple of weeks ago.

I'm sure that another opportunity to visit your lovely home and abuse your hospitality will not go amiss. It also gives us the opportunity to drive down that fantastic road you showed us last year. 8)

Folks, it might be an idea to start a list of who wants to go, as checking hotel availability in Inverness on the 28th, a lot of them are fully booked as it is the holiday weekend.

garry
06-07-04, 06:13 PM
depending on the numbers and availability, the B&B most people booked into last year was quite good....although a hotel was suggested as a better idea if a repeat trip were ever organized (bar etc ;) )

About availability on Lindisfarne.. http://www.holy-island.info/gallery/index.htm We considered a night on the island last month. The odd room was available but I also checked out the availability of accommodation http://www.lindisfarne.org.uk/accommodation.htm for a block book at one of the hotels while I was at it (knowing a possible SAAB trip could be a future option)..... could be tricky if left too late :o ..... book early as they say.
Also..... what about the tides? http://www.lindisfarne.org.uk/general/travel.htm .....you need to get there at the right time.... http://www.holy-island.info/lindisfarnecastle/2004-opening.htm
http://www.barkshire.co.uk/britain/lindisfarne.jpg
I don't want to put you off Lindisfarne at all.... its stunning. but really does require military planning to avoid disappointment. :cheesy:
and its got pubs! ....erm 2...plus the hotel bars

As for stops on the way south from the highlands..... What about Ocean Terminal @ Edinburgh..... Big car park, decent coffee/toilets/shops and the Queens old boat. Britannia

http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/design_jon/SAAB/Queens_boat.jpg

coffee. (overlooking boat)

http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/design_jon/SAAB/Ocean_terminal.jpg

Further east, Bass Rock (north Berwick) ...where all the Puffins stay. (big rock in background)

http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/design_jon/SAAB/Bass_)Rock.jpg

And a suggestion for a monday Photo Opp prior to the dart home ..... Bamburgh Castle just south of Lindisfarne...

Been thinking a bit about this one. Whilst us hardy northern folk think nothing of driving a couple of hundred miles in a day, for the soft southerners (ducks and hides! :cheesy: ) who will have had to drive a fair way to get to us, Glasgow to Inverness is a fair hike in a day, and last time it was felt there was perhaps too much driving.

Can we think of an alternative? One idea would be to do Strathclyde to maybe Oban the first day (Oban was great last time), a scenic route back towards Lindisfarne on the second and a bit of a tour and depart the third. This would reduce the mileage and allow more breaks, socialising etc.

Just an idea, what do others think?

Inverness was a long way... Although a very enjoyable drive and Meal! it was all a blur past Fort William as fatigue set in. .... Missing out Inverness would also miss out the fantastic Glen Co! :-? .... Unless we headed north after an overnight at Oban along the coast A828 to pick up the A82 south through Glen Co the next day! :D

Proposed timetable:
Saturday 8am: Meet at Strathclyde Park.
Saturday 9am: Meet at Drovers Inn, Loch Lomondside
Saturday 10am: Head North.

Is it possible to make the Drovers Inn from Strathclyde Park within 2 hours? providing you find Strathclyde Park before 8am? ... Why not just meet at the Drovers Inn before the departure time of 10am? :-?

Last years trip was a triumph the way it was so whatever is decided I'll be there... :D Its great that Gordy is taking the time to arrange another one this year.

Garry, you just wanted an excuse to show off that great picture again! :cheesy: Strathclyde Park is just a convenient spot to meet right beside the M74. I think it's useful to have a meet there for anyone who isn't certain where the Drovers is, it's quite easy to pass the Drovers if you happen to blink at the wrong time. I'm intending to be at the Drovers for 9am. The 10am start was to allow for photos and greetings etc.

TFatC, I've deliberately started the trip earlier to try to ensure that we have more stops on the way North. Hopefully this will allow the drivers a break and a rest and allow them a greater appreciation of the countryside.

However, the trip south on Sunday may still be an issue as we do have a huge amount of ground to cover to get to Lindisfarne.

Can I ask people to indicate their preferences please.

1) A trip north to Inverness following last years route.
2) A trip keeping to the southern half of Scotland and Argyll.

I'm happy to entertain any other suggestions so please keep them coming.

I like TFatC idea, its a 5 hour drive from oban to Lindisfarne, but we have all day to do it, either that or break it up by doing Oban/Glen Coe and back to the central belt Stirling/Edinburgh on the sunday, have a meal stay over night then go down with the rest to Lindisfarne, Its only a couple of hours down the road, have something to eat, and then the southerners could head off south and the rest of us could come back up.

What's the scoop on the meet - still on?

I'm in two minds as to whether it's still on. At the moment I'm not sensing a lot of excitement about it.

Can I just confirm those folks who are still interested?

Just an idea, what do others think?
may live in the south but northern by birth :cheesy: if i can make the meet i will but all depends on the missus who hates the t8 :-?? :-?? wierd woman or maybe just the way i drive lol

so i am there provisionally :D :D :D

We are going to have to get a place to go, do people fancy doing,
1. Same as last time, Strathclyde park, oyster bar, Oban.Sunday mallaig and or coming down to the central belt through Glen Coe on the Sunday, then going down to Lindisfarne on the Monday with those from England shire, to break up their journey, and easy to get back down and back up for those from Scotland, and those from Scotland can choose which part of the journey/day they want to do.
2. Inverness
3. As 1, but down to Lindisfarne as Tfatc suggested on the Sunday.
4. as 2, but down to Lindisfarne as Gordy suggested on the Sunday
5. any other suggestions

We are going to have to move this along as we are running out of time to get booked up anywhere, lets give it a couple of days and then vote on where to go.
:D

So folk's,what's the preference Oban or Inverness.

Gordy
12-08-04, 09:37 AM
Thanks Microcat however, Im going to issue a dictat here just so we can finalise everything and take it forward.

The route is going to be:

Meet Saturday 10am Drovers Inn at the head of Loch Lomond. (If anyone wants to meet at Strathclyde Park prior to that to convoy up to the Drovers, let me know).

Head up the A82 then onto the A85 to Oban. Overnight in Oban.

Sunday lunchtime(?) head down the A816 to Lochgilphead then onto the A83 through Inverary. Back down the A82 to the Glasgow area. (I'll leave it up to you long distance guys if you want to overnight in the Glasgow area before heading home).

Hopefully this route will enable us to experience some of Scotland and also some of the legendary Saab comradeship without having to drive too much.

If anyone knows of a critically important reason why we can't follow this route (ie road washed etc) please let me know.

To find accomodation in Oban you can try the AA website:

http://www.theaa.com/getaway/index.html

If anyone knows of other accomodation sites please post them.

OK, there will be a pre-meet meet which will LEAVE Strathclyde Park Water Sports Centre car park. (Just off J6 M74) at 9am on Saturday. I may even take the right motorway when we leave this year

Saab 8v is referring to this kind of thing in his Sunday night reference http://www.strathycruise.com/frameset.htm :cheesy:

microcat36
12-08-04, 10:38 AM
Gordy, since you are wanting to do the Oban run if you go the route that we went on the last one strathclyde park, Oyster bar for something to eat, (that way anyone only wanting to do the Sat and not stay overnight at oban, can enjoy meeting everyone), up to Oban , overnight at Oban, then Oban to Connel bridge and Ballachulish, back down through Glen Coe on the sunday ( great road and scenery) to the central belt.
Those coming from England could stay overnight if they wanted to, and we could have a meal with them on the sunday night, before they left on Monday, just a suggestion.

Gordy
12-08-04, 11:14 AM
I think that's an excellent idea Microcat. I'm not sure if dictats can be amended so I may be setting a precedent here but the route is now as Microcat suggested.

We were in Oban a few weeks ago and found a super restaurant just over the bridge at Connell. The seafood platter (described as a 'big' meal) was only 13.00 and was probably the most expensive dish on the menu. It was so big that I cringed with embarrassment when I saw it and could only eat half. (Anyone who knows me, knows that it must've been huge with a capital H!!)

Might be a nice place for the evening meal. Big car park, varied menu (and kiddie portions for those with wains), beer garden, supreme view from the dining area (over the bay back to Oban) It's only a 10 min drive back to Oban for the evening session....

Morning all!

Have we reached a decision on the place for the evening meal yet?

A colleague of mine spent 8 hours yesterday calling B&B's to try and get accommodation in Oban. It's going to be a busy weekend by the sound of things. We probably need to book quite quickly, especially if we're going to be a big group

ps - I agree with Colin. The Gathering was nice (and the wine was so reasonably priced!)

Just a thought, would it not be better to leave strathy and take the Crianlarich/Callander route to The Drovers, Seems a bit silly to drive the worst road in the area in both directions if we are approaching from tarbert(tarbet?), loch lomond as per last trip.slightly longer drive but probably more enjoyable.
