Thought I would start a project thread on my car.

History:

The car is a 1987 Saab 900 turbo convertible produced in October of 1986. The car was ordered in 1986, finished in optional "Silver Metallic" on Buffalo Gray leather.

The car was ordered with the following accessories:
-Saab leather arm rest
-Privacy storage bin hole cover
-Clarion Graphic Equalizer
-Reflector door guards
-Front bonnet edge hood protector strip
-Fog lamp protectors in addition to the "Saab" covers
-Rear mud flaps
-Dealer installed undercoating as part of the "protection package"
-Roadside assistance
-Deep pile "Saab" embroidery floor mats
-Dash top storage compartment
-Saab Sports Exhaust
-Saab engine tuning kit
-Saab road hazard kit, includes road hazard triangle

After taxes cost was $43,500 (2009: $76,000)

The car was owned until 2006 when the original owner passed away. I bought it with only 156,000kms on the last day of summer in 2006. The car has a full Saab service history with all invoices and stamps.

The day I bought it:

Then this happened on the second day I owned it:

So I had the car cut at the factory welds and replaced with a new section. I opted not to have it "patched"

It ended up costing nearly $1,200 after the upper ball-joints were replaced.

I took it in for a computer alignment after and was told the car was perfectly straight:o:D. No charge, no alignment. I asked them to check it again. Still straight.

The consensus was a battery had leaked and caused the paint to melt which then induced corrosion. The spot was so isolated to this baseball sized area. The rest or the car is virtually spotless.

So after this the car was very reliable for two years. I did a complete brake job overhaul and fixed the cruise control.

Then after I took it out of storage in spring of 2008 I got a speeding ticket, 5 minutes later the HEAD GASKET BLEW!

And so it began:

And then back together again:

Now the project:

-Refinish Bumpers (peeling)
-Refinish Stock wheels
-New tires
-Replace Crank Pulley
-Replace A/C compressor and charge the system
-Adjust top
-New front shock absorbers
-Replace front fog lamp
-Full interior detail
-Have undercoating checked and touched up
-Slight adjustment on rear section of exhaust
-Dye bolster on driver's seat (showing some wear)
-Heavy leather condition with Gliptone

Peeling: ICK!

Should be lots of fun, hope to have this car looking factory fresh very soon!

Awesome car! Could you perhaps post some pictures when you are doing the refinish on the bumpers?

Just installed some new belts. No more squealing. I was sure my crank pulley packed it in; however, it appears the old belts were over stretched and the tensioners couldn't keep them proper.

Always buy belts for 900s as a set!

Put the car back on the road! Bumpers and wheels refinish are next!

I bought one time "Continental ContiTech" belts for the Saab, in a matched set, two with one box

I was looking at them, looked some more, hey they are not the same length! Not much maybe a few millimetre but still. I put the longer one first and the shorter one out assuming the pulleys would be angled from worn bearings...

Just booked a wheel refinish, hopefully Friday. Am I crazy for refinishing the stock wheels?:o Around $400.

Ordered leather dye and a Gliptone leather treatment kit from a UK supplier on an ebay store. I read positive words about Gliptone leather products.

Just noticed your post and had to share our toy also purchased at Castor Motors. We are going a different route with ours as I am a bit of a HP nut and lets face it boost is addictive. Lucky for us the previous owner did a lot of work to along those lines to it so it's making my job fairly easy.. Your car is looking good keep up the good work!

I remember seeing that car on Craigslist, mikewerks! Looks awesome! What does it have done to it so far? FMIC, I seem to recall? You gotta bring this out to a SCWC meet -- we meet at alternating Ikeas the last Saturday of every month. Tomorrow's is in Richmond at 10:30 am, I think. Tom and I haven't decided if we're going yet as we may be working on an '87 8vNA auto into which we're dropping a T16/5sp.

My '85 SPG was a Castor Motors car as well and has a couple of tweaks... 185bhp-spec red box, 3bar FPR, Jak Stoll chip, bigger injectors, Group 9 AID and a SaabSavior short shifter.

Tom's convertible is running great these days. We put the vacuum advance capsule from a '93 CE in to go with his 190bhp-spec (from a 9000) red box and 3 bar. I was running that capsule before I put my AID in... the AID is AWESOME.

Good idea, let's meet some time. We need more 900s. I hope I will see you guys there too. I know you already, but have never met Tom. It's about time I would say...

So mikewerks wants some more horsepower? We should tell him that only jacking up the boost is not the right way. You need proper fuel and ignition values. You can bring the B202 easily to 200hp without going more than 12 psi.
