The Aero or T16S were the European versions of the US SPG. I think the only differences were that leather interiors and air-con were optional extra's on the Aero or T16S while standard on the SPG. I'm sure someone will correct me!

That sounds about right. I think US spec cars tended to get stuff like leather as standard.

US versions had a cat as well. Does anyone have the production amounts for the aero and T16S? I think only about 7K SPGs were imported from '85 to '91.

Well in my experience the 'Aero's' tend to break down alot!
No seriously i think the only difference between the two is that 'SPG's' have no turbo badging anywhere, just a 'Saab' logo on the boot(trunk) and came fully loaded with leather and A/C, i also think they may have had front fog/spot lights under the bumper- correct me if im wrong!

I think they got 160bhp upto 87-88 then they went to 175bhp or in some cases 185 with the red box?.

The catalytic converter indeed is a curse, for once a problem that I DON'T have on my Saab! :grin:

Here's a list of power output levels for 900 Turbos with and without cat: (all are DIN hp)

T8 145 hp '79-'85
T8 IC 155 hp '86-'90
T8 cat (euro) 140 hp '86-'88
T8 US cat 135 hp '79-'84
T16 175 hp '84-'90
T16 cat 160 hp '88-'93 ?
T16 'red' 185 hp '86-'90 ?
T16 'red',cat 175 hp '88-'93 ?

According to my owners manual my car has "165hp w/ SPG option". And "195ftlbs w/SPG option". 160 and 188 are for std. issue turbos. Anyone have any ideas why this is? My guess is that the APC box is different.

Yeah APC is tweaked or completely replaced with the "red" one

One word, Cat.
As i think about this, if the engine is not breathing as intended,(damn Cat.) then it mucks up all the engine systems, So there must be some unforeseen restrictions, i.e. ignition timing, ECU, APC, fuel delivery, etc...

That's just my theory... easy solution, remove the cat.

We had CATs forced upon us over here in 91, 92ish but the T16 aeros were still rated at 175/185 bhp. So it can't be 'just' the CAT that made the difference. Unless the CATs were different over the pond....

It´s not all about the max hp. If you take a look at the torque value you´ll find the difference. No CAT 175hp/273Nm / CAT 175hp/258Nm (Carlsson) also max hp is at higher rpms 5700 vs 5500.
Latter Aero / Ruby were first to have higher torque w/ CAT (Aero 277Nm/Ruby 288Nm).
This is mainly due Lucas injection since APC´s are all the same.
