Hi
I"m mave(owen), and this is my first outing,i have an early 1993 9000 aero gearbox serial gm757 01, i know this shows discrepancies ,with what you have posted on box serials, but as you say there are discrepancies.
I wont bore you with my hideous and painful year with a certain "transmission specialist!" but it boils down to a few questions i would like to ask to people i know love their aeros as i know you do, and was hoping that some of you knew a little more....
As i have said my original box had the serial above, but the garage(WITHOUT PERMISSION!) replaced it with another, serialGM 657 03 and i would like to know if anyone out there knew if there was a way of checking what this box came out of, because it was not from an aero, as my car is now doing 3600rpm in fifth at 70mph!!!!
Checked with Saab and all they could tell me is that no aeros were fitted with this number, and it should not have been fitted.
If anyone could give me any information i would be most grateful and im glad to see there are people out there waxing and loving their aeros as much as me(my wife and children think im a sad!!, although my sons love the car!!)
Thanks for reading my first outing (hopefully!!), and i appreciate any info from you all.

P.s
I have noted that many red aeros have black wing mirrors and dash and mine has red colour coded mirrors and i think birds eye maple veneer dash?
Any thoughts???

RUSure you are doing 70 mph? Check with a GPS unit, pace a friend's car at an agreed speed, find one of those speedometer check sections on a local freeway, find a speed trap and drive through at an indicated 90mph (any slower and you might not get a "speed reading" even if your speedo is out), if you have the on board computer you can re-set the "average speed" and then drive at a constant 70 mph and check what it displays when it first displays a reading (which will be your actual speed) as compared to the speedo, or have the speedo checked for accuracy by a service shop.

My bet is no one changed out the speedo drive when they transplanted the gearbox so you have a speedo drive from the 91-92 model. Since the Aero speedo should be calibrated to display speeds for about a 10% taller overall ratio than your "new" gearbox, the replacement speedo drive will under read the actual speed. The engine rpm is taken from the crank sensor so will show actual rpm.

Hi,
Many thanks for the reply your input is very wellcome..
As you suggested i went out a friend and did the 70mph thing and it was right, at 3,600rpm i am doing that speed, also i dont know what it would do to a new recon box, but i took it up to 90mph, and was reading just over 4,500rpm, and i know that is not right!.
The speedo sender unit was one of my first calls, but according to the Saab technician all of them are the same and work of the crank, rpm?
I do know that you guys know far more than these guy looking at a screen and quoting numbers so i will purchase others to test.
Also onthis matter, i did give you wrong serial numbers, the box number was 651 03 not 657, my appologies for that..
What i do know is that the box i have came from one of the following- 2lti, 2lt turbo, or 2.3lt low pressure turbo, all of which as you say have different gear ratios.
Once again many thanks for your help and knowledge and any more assistance will be gratefully recieved.

many thanks owen
