I drive a 93 saab 9000 cse. Recently, I was traveling and had some car trouble. It overheated in stop and go traffic so I had it towed to a mechanic where I was traveling to. I was told it was the head gasket and it would cost around $1000 to repair. I decided to not spend the $$$ to repair the car. I've just been told by another mechanic about steel seal, and he says it's a magical repair for a head gasket. Has anyone heard of this? Does it work?
Steel Seal sounds like some sketchy way to try to get around a head gasket failure. $1000 is pretty normal from a mechanic. I usually hear of around $1200 for a shop to do your head gasket...
Get confirmation from testing the coolant that the head gasket has really blown. Many very cheap to fix things could cause overheating.
Best advice is get it to a reliable non-dealer Saab place and see what they think. If it really comes to changing HG you are in much better hands with them.
First thing I would do is re-torque the head, free and it takes about an hour the first time. Then, run the diagnostics to see if its really the head gasket.
