Why does the PCV and coolant line run in the same pipe? I noticed my Porsche 928 does the same thing. Is this so that water vapors from the crankcase don't condense on their way back to the intake? Also why are there coolant lines running to the throttle body?
I installed a catch can on my car and piped its outlet into the BPC line that runs to the intake. Is there any problem with doing this?
That's what most people do. They also bypass the coolant lines going through the throttle. There is no harm in installing a catch can as long as you did it right. Show us some pics!
It's for anti icing which was a real problem for earlier SAABs and completely fixed in the 9000.
The coolant line running to the PCV hose actually passes inside the PCV hose and connects to a steel tube that runs down to that odd fitting on the turbo inlet air hose. From there it returns to the coolant jacket, maybe through the turbo bearing, I can't remember.
Most cars have throttle plate heating by means of a coolant jacket fed from the cooling system. On SAAB engines this was enough to stop throttle icing but the PCV system also used to freeze and overpressure the crankcase. My 1978 99GL blew the sump gasket when this happened at minus 30C. Of course that meant removal of the entire drivetrain as this gasket actually sealed the transmission to the engine block! My 84 900T suffered occaisonally from a frozen throttle which was always thrilling and sometimes from a frozen PCV system which didn't blow any gaskets but did make a strange noise until the ice melted.
Bottom line is you need these systems if you ever get ambient temperatures approaching freezing. Unless you live in places that are always warm, like California, and plan never to drive anywhere cold you need these two features.
OK, I installed everything, then I noticed that oil vapors are escaping through the oil fill tube. The catch can must be too restrictive. With the stock arrangement having vacuum draw the vapors, wouldn't unfiltered air be drawn down through the oil fill?
Did you guys just get rid of the vacuum line going to the PCV?
What about the other side of the catch can, piped back into the intake or vented to atmosphere?
