PCV question

I'm replacing the gasket on the valve cover on a B234R because the old one is rotting. I think this is where the gas smell was coming from. Can I just remove the small line from the manifold and keep the large one that goes pre-turbo?

From what I gather, under vacuum air is sucked from the pre-turbo hose past the valve cover and ends up in the manifold. Under boost, the check valve stops the pressure and the PCV gases just go before the turbo again. Do I understand this correctly?

Would running a catch can here be a better idea?
