hello- here's the story. my 95 9000 2.3l wouldn't start this afternoon. i'd been driving around off an on all morning "50 or so miles"- stopped to get lunch and when i got back it fired up. i pulled out of the parking spot and within about 50 feet it quit and wouldn't start again.
the fuel pump is the obvious culprit and i've read all the posts regarding various testing methods and replacement. i replaced a fuel pump on my old 900 but it gave me plenty of for warning- i.e. noise and poor performance. my 9000 has been running fine. ( i did check the fuse and its good)
so, question one: do they (fuel pump) ever just stop working with no warning signs?
now for question two: now this may seen unrelated so bear with me.
yesterday i did some makeshift repairs on the exhaust system. i took the center muffler off because the front exhaust pipe was separating from it. i got one of those 5 inch long flange couplings and inserted it into the front of the muffler... now when i say inserted i mean "beat the hell out of the muffler to get the f#cking flange in". needless to say lots of rusty chunks fell out from inside the muffler in the process. and when everything was back together i started it up and it looked like some fiber-ish stuff came out the tail pipe.
so question two: is the exhaust clogged? is that why the car wont start?
question three: why do i always feel the need to just repair instead of replace : (
jumped fuse and relay and hear the fuel pump running. pulled plugs- smells like gas and looks wet.
now what? DI?

Yes, the fuel pump can die a sudden death without giving any symptoms. The DI cassette can do that too btw. It's happened to me once with the fuel pump. The car started fine and ran normally then shut it off and tried to start it again and nothing but just cranking.
The other failure mode is intermittent it will work for a while then it won't and after sitting for a bit will run again. That has happened to me as well.
Have you tried tapping or pounding on either the fuel tank bottom or on the trunk floor in the upper left corner near the fuel pump to see if the car will start after that?
If it does and then dies again, the pump motor has bad spots on it causing it to quit. If it does not run at all it is totally dead.
For the DI. Have you swapped it out with another known good one yet? This would be worth trying too.
thanks for the info!- i really appreciate it!
i'm thinking its the DI now. i was able to jump the fuse and relay and heard the fuel pump- also i pulled the plugs and they were wet and smelled of gas.
i did try and test for spark but didn't get any... though it's kind of a pain grounding out the plugs and peeking the the windshield under the hood- blah blah blah. anyway i didn't see spark so i'm really hoping thats the culprit. wish i knew for sure my test was performed correctly.
is there anyone out here in western massachusetts that has a spare DI i could test my 9000 with???
oh yeah- and whats all this about the Crank Position Sensor? hows that figure into the mix?
I was driving along the M3 in the MIDDLE OF NOWHERE at 230am the day before new year's eve when my fuel pump, with no warning whatsoever, after the car had been absolutely 100%, decided to spectacularly give up. Spluttered and died pretty much. Not cool. So yes, they can go without warning.
Anything other than the NGK plugs will cause harm to the DI cassette.
