Hey all,
Just bought a 1989 9000 2.0 Turbo auto, with broken timing chain.
picking it up in 2 days... then the fun begins with swapping the B234R and manual 'box (including removing TCS from the B234R), aero seats, and seeing how much work to change the aero's ACC and dash computers in, along with going to the 17" rims i had on my aero.
possibly swapping front and rear ARB's, and making a piggyback one out of the original rear ARB from the '89.
any other parts i still have left will eventually be fitted, along with some nice new shiny parts.
unfortunately though, i will have to remap my ecu to a stage 1 or even stock (is currently a maptun stage 3) until i can get hold of a new exhaust system. as i will be disabling TCS via T5 suite, will have to re-flash with lower stage tuning
any input as to any troubles i may run into with this list of things to be done would be appreciated.
thanks in advance!
Go on, I'm quite interested here...why??! What's wrong with the Aero? Barring the traction control, but as you say you can disable it (I didn't know this but fair enough).
Sorry, was picking up the new car yesterday, so was unable to reply
about 20 months ago, i had a slight accident in the aero.. didnt see a corner (the local council has now erected high visibility corner signs!), and went down an embankment, rolled once, parked in some trees.
all the doors still open on the aero, so the shell held up quite well.
But now, I found a cheap 9000 turbo in good condition, and will customise to my liking.
Ahh, GTlegs, I was actually picking up the car from Melbourne yesterday!
can't wait to get started with the changeover.. the '89 has a broken timing chain, but i happen to have a spare one for that engine laying around, so will be replacing that first, seeing if the engine is fine, then pulling it out. always good to be able to sell a working engine.
also came with a pretty new DI cartridge and working APC solenoid, so this gives me 2 spares for the B234R.
will keep you all posted with photos etc as i go along
Did I mention that I got a 9000 Griffin the other week? Its gonna have its RWC and the whole front end of the motor replaced next week (to avoid any future hassles with tensioners and cambelts). It drives beautifully (touch wood).
GTlegs - nice work btw...
I haven't been a real fan of the CD shape, as i tend to fill from boot lid to front seats when i go away, but from what i have read and heard, the griffin is quite a nice car to drive.
on another note - looks like i will be also installing an oil catch can and then doing a 3" air intake pipe, as i just found my 2m of 3" aluminium tubing.
going to visit the 2 cars tomorrow to start a bit of this work.
Sunday is the day the aero loses it's subframe and engine.
then comes the fun task of cleaning it up, working out what needs to be ordered, as I am considering doing the timing and balance chains, including all sprockets etc while its out (only done 130,000 kms, but easier while engine out), replacing exhaust manifold studs (1 broken, needs removing), air con compressor mount replacing, and anything else i can see that needs to be done.
will post some pics up soon!
Me too. Will follow this with interest. Yes doing the timing/balance chains, at least checking them while it is out will be easier than when it is in. But from a complete novice on Saabs let me say that doing them in the car is not that hard.
I did the "remove subframe" trick... so I didnt remove the engine from the car, I removed the car from the engine!!:cheesy:
the rest of the day was filled with removing the aero's dash and body wiring loom, manual gear shift (doing manual conversion to the '89, so need all those parts) and cleaning up the leather steering wheel from the aero so it can go in the '89
Ok, so the clutch master cylinder, pipe work and pedal are now sitting in the floor of the shed. I will be putting a kit through the master cylinder while its out, just as a preventative measure, checking out the condition of the flex hose, and a tiny bit of welding work on the clutch pedal, as the hole for the link to the master cylinder is elongated.
also today I decided to pull my Forge dump valve apart, and found it full of dirt and water, so that got a good cleaning and lubrication before being put back together.
hi.hmmm they are a strong beast the 9000's.yes there is a 3 litre engine in the 9000 (actually a gm-h not many came to australia apparently) the same basic motor as in the gm900/9-3. need to watch out for kangaroosters on some of the back roads around wagga especially around the back of kapooka especially around uranquinty.glad to see you're still vertical, smiling and here to indulge in the '89 update.be interesting to see the results.love that car.cheers
Ok, today the body wiring loom FINALLY is sitting in the shed... along with a repaired clutch pedal. I was quite surprised how heavy the loom was! Also removed fuel tank on Aero so as to use the newer pump and sender unit. I have an LPT Trionic ECU on its way to me so I can flash it with a stage 1 B234R tune, just for registration purposes. Can't wait to get into pulling the B202 out.. will post pics once that engine and transmission are out. And I might even have a Carlsson bodykit on its way
the '89 is all prepped for the engine to come out, just ran out of time yesterday - spent too long playing with the wiring loom, trying to remove the wires associated with TCS before giving up - will do that at a later time.
OK, been a while since I have been online - moving house etc, but on my spare tuesdays, I have been still working on this...
list of things done now -
new 2.3 litre lower engine mounts installed
new water pump on
new idler pulley and tensioner pulley installed
full chassis loom from '95 Aero installed
Dash replaced with woodgrain dash from Aero
Aero leather steering wheel installed
Automatic Climate Control system upgraded to aero version (had to change temp sensors and stepper motors)
Aero instrument cluster installed
Driver's electric memory seat computer installed and mounted
manual gear shift installed
This Tuesday, I will try to take some photos, will be making the automatic brake pedal a manual brake pedal, possibly installing the clutch master cylinder, and possibly installing the Aero seats.
keep you posted!
