My wife's 93 CSE decided to turn it's 4-ways on and off a few times on her way home today. They would flash for about 20 cycles, then stop. A bit later it would start again. Best part is once she got home and parked, it kept going. I went out to troubleshoot, and they would cycle slowly, about half rate. If I pressed the hazard light button, it would try to cycle, but it was interrupted by the slower zombie-flash. I pulled the turn signal fuse, and the hazard fuse, but neither had any effect. I could hear the relay clicking behind the fuse panel.
So where do I start? The relay? I did a search, but didnt manage to find anything like this. Suggestions welcome.
i would try the relay first, maybe it is failing and the circuit is completed, allowing the lights to come on, and whatever gives it the timer for the flash delay is running out of power from a dying battery(assuming that they still behave this way with the car turned off, wasnt too clear.) pull the relay, check it for anything irregular, if it persists replace with known good one...
Not the relay at all. I got the dash all tore up, and reconnected the battery- I could pull the flasher relay, and it would keep right on flashing. The sound was coming from this little jewel:
I am assuming this is the alarm brain. And mine is touched in the head. This would explain the slow flash rate- the lights flash at a different rate for the alarm than they do for the hazard lights. I am waiting for Scanwest to get back to me to see if they have a spare to sell. I have always loathed the "alarm" on this car. It is utterly useless, and my opinion of it has dropped precipitously since last night. Has anyone else experienced such a failure?
That's odd that it would set the blinkers off but not the siren and it wouldn't disable your car from driving.
I just got the alarm to work, and it works nice! I like that it will go off when you try and open the trunk with it being engaged or try and unlock the passenger side door.
Make sure you get the same yellow alarm rather than the black ones. The black ones aren't nearly as good.
A while back I parked my car and went inside a store to shop. When I got back out my car couldn't start. All the lights came on but no starting. I had it towed (stupid me, it's a manual) to a shop. They traced it back to the alarm and did the same thing you did. I later "corrected" their fix when I got a new alarm.
