: The "Official" Beauty-Shot Thread:*dial-up warning
CleveSaab 25-07-03, 07:01 PM First off, let me say this is not an OFFICIAL SaabCentral post (whatever that would be). Many forums I visit people make OFFICIAL threads all the time. Like the "OFFICIAL DESKTOP WALLPAPER THREAD". That is why it's in quotes, it's not a SaabCentral sanctioned thread.
In fact, I did this once long before I was a moderator, HERE. (http://www.saabcentral.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=9196)
Had to say that because now that I'm a Mod, I don't want people to think this is somehow a truly OFFICIAL thread.
OK, ANYWAY, here's the idea. Get a picture of your car, kind of 'arty' if possible, and post it here. There's a catch, though. There has to be something in the background that shows a landmark, or something unique about where you live.
Kind of a combo 'show off' thread and a 'where do you live' thread. So, if you live in a one stoplight town, get a shot of that light. Hahaha
If you don't use the SC attachment feature, and use your own webspace, please keep pictures no larger than 640x480 resolution in respect for those on 56K modems.
Sound like a good thread??? I think so!
Allow me to start. Cleveland is the land o' bridges. We have 100's of them here. This is an old trestle bridge that spans the Cuyahoga River. This is actually right by the part of the river that caught on fire many years ago and sparked the Clean Water Act of 1977. I love how the sparkle turned out on my car (which looks even better on the not resized pic).
Mom-in-law just waxed it with Nu-Finish.

Now get out there and get some snaps!! :D
hey cleve, what's with those parts-store hubcaps??
CleveSaab 26-07-03, 12:38 AM OMG is it THAT obvious??
Actually a K-Mart hubcap set.
I couldn't stand looking at my beat up Saab ones anymore, and these were cheap.
They're just temps. Looking to score some in Hershey if I'm able to attned the event.
BurnsSide42 26-07-03, 01:17 AM yeah, i was gonna say something about those HQ caps...but i was being controlled...but u need some real rims on that, ditch the caps and get some Turbo rims atleast....
DeLorean 26-07-03, 01:45 AM The $9.99 "special purchase" hub caps... I can spot em a mile away. I think you need a set of "real" saab hub caps for that. maybe some from an older base model 900. they are actually quite nice for hub caps. most people don't notice the fact that they ARE hub caps till they take a very close look. But I MUST say... better to have the steel rims showing then the K-mart caps
CleveSaab 26-07-03, 12:46 PM I talked to someone that went to the last Saab convention and he said you could buy rims there, dirt cheap. So that might be the plan.
I did buy some hubcap spray paint, so I'm going to try to paint my old ones here someday.
You do get what you pay for. Those caps were like $18. They make a creaky noise occasionally.
ragtopcav 26-07-03, 05:59 PM Cleve' pay the shipping [this offer is strictly for Clevesaab, Moderator for Saabcentral] and you can have the factory alloys off my '94se [perfect they ain't], they are currently in a stack in my backyard.
I read the abuse you recieved and thought to myself those guys are being unfair! I was going to put them on UK Ebay, but if shipping is cost effective they're yours.
CleveSaab 26-07-03, 09:44 PM :o
Ragtop = PM'ed....
We have plenty of nice girls here, Piece.
jnorris 27-07-03, 12:22 PM Hardly a 'beauty shot' but there aren't too many landmarks in my part of town. This is the stadium of the local football/soccer team and is probably the area's best known 'asset' - it's a bit faceless but can any devoted footie fans recognise it?? (btw that sign says North Stand if you can't see it).
I love showing off my Saab, even if it is still bone stock. :)
I wish I get a photo with the mountains in the background but she's not on the road yet. I just bought her a few weeks ago and she needs a bit of work.
Anyways, here is photo in front of the apartment building where I bought her.
jeronimo 27-07-03, 05:38 PM Hmm. Is that your caravan at the edge of the pic?? :nono; :cheesy:

mattfaulks 27-07-03, 06:25 PM Well the dye works is obviously the main tourist attraction of Hinckley now that the old Fludes building has been (half) pulled down
And yes its a caravan (An Avon no less), but its not mine (honest gov ) you'd be more worried if you could see the horse box parked next to it

ThaBrkrs349 28-07-03, 02:09 AM I can't wait to post a few! We'll have some Times Square, Empire State Building, and Wall Street shots last this week of my car!
Also, Independance Hall in Philadelphia. Maybe a beach shot as well!
escalator guru 28-07-03, 02:13 AM i drove by uncle sam's house in greenfield, NH last night out of sheer boredom, then realized that had the car not been falling apart it would have made a wonderful beauty shot.
do MS Paint pictures count?
Thought I`d bring this thread back to life :)
A friend and myself drove the Saabs to the coast today not far from where I live.
Anyway; here are the photos; sorry about the size... I really should upload the originals to some webspace somewhere.
Ben
Ben - is that Johnshaven or Gourdon by any chance?
Drop by the workshop (Newtonhill) sometime and I will make you a coffee! You can also see my 95 stroker, 99t and 900 T16 which are all there if you are as sad as me and like looking at Saabs....
Hi TFatC,
Its actually the coastline by Macduff! As you head to (the now closed) open air swimming pool at Tarlair.
Might just pop by to see your Saabs if I`m over that way some time.
But first I have to fix the steering in my 900 which has suddenly decided to make driving more "interesting" :o

bassist5 02-10-03, 07:00 PM Is it legal to post a picture of someone else's car? If so, I may have a good one (Well, I think it's good, at least..). It's a picture of the old 900 I was going to buy.
CleveSaab 02-10-03, 07:04 PM Well, we won't yell at ya'. ;)
My idea was to get folks to take thier car out and get some pics in front of cool landmark-type stuff. Maybe even stuff that could be used as wallpaper by other folks.
But;
the thread is pretty much dead at this point, so anything will work. hehehe ;)
bassist5 02-10-03, 07:07 PM Well.. I shall try to scan it over the weekend, and if I can, I'll post it. I can't get it by a landmark, because 1) It isn't mine, so I can't move it, and 2) even if it was, it doesn't run. I'm still not giving up on getting it.. reguardless of what my dad says :D
SaabScott 02-10-03, 09:34 PM Not much of a land mark, but I see this view every day when I leave the house (except that my car is in my driveway).
And Cleve, a thread is never really dead ... they just take a break for a while ...

ragtopcav 04-10-03, 05:50 AM I shan't copy the pic' it's the one Garry took of Munki passing him in Scotland, I've found myself going back just too have another look, It is difficult to explain but the picture captures a fine moment, there something that implies great speed [or better still 'a sense of pace'] even though there may not have been.

Hey Cleve, isn't that your WIFE'S car????
OK… what the heck, it’s not the best picture in the whole world but this 1986 900 base model has never let me down… pushing the 300K mark…I since have added a turbo wing to the car and all the black trim… but she’s still my little “Putt-Putt” as we call her around my house.
Now for the “back ground image” well how many people can say they have a picture of their car on the test pad at Sikorsky Aircraft (probably going to get shot now)….
Sikorsky is the home of the Presidential helicopter fleet and the preliminary testing facility for the new Comanche helicopters….. so… having your car sitting on the flight field is a …… lets just say by the time you read this I will probably be in big do-do…..

It's a neat color that works well. I think VW used it in the 70's and called it Panama Brown (no metalic factor then)

Why thank you! It's nothing special, it's an '87 8 valve 4 -door 5 - speed with 188,596 on the clock. The only thing I've added were the Hella 500 driving lamps, and I painted the steel wheels with Massey-Ferguson Dark Silver. The wheels came out pretty nice looking I thought.
bassist5 07-10-03, 11:01 PM I love the driving lamps and the roof rack. That's exactly what my dream C900 would look like, except with diff. wheels, and I like the pre. facelifts better.
8valvegrowl 07-10-03, 11:06 PM I like the pre-facelift cars too...the rack is most useful for my bike and snowboard...don't know what I'd do w/o it.

I came really close to having my grandparents' '92 Uno imported here.. that would have been so cool.. the only Uno in Utah, probably :cheesy:
Stefano 09-06-04, 12:24 PM A Fiat Uno!??! Why would you do such a nasty thing? I would not have a Uno in the States even if they paied me. If you think American cars feel cheap and unrefined, get in a Uno first.
So cool? maybe, as long as you don't met an European that knows what car it is, and you can spot him because he's laughing at your car....
Probably the most sold car ever in Italy, though.
Be sure to import also a couple of parts car with it, since the avaibility of parts and the absolute need for them......
bassist5 09-06-04, 12:29 PM Haha, I dunno. I like cars like that, mostly cause I grew up around 'em I guess.
My 99T during a magazine photo-shoot at Bruntingthorpe Airfield - an old US airbase.

I remember seeing that article but cannot recall which magazine it was. Did'nt have a chance to read it through (mostly looked at the pics  ). There were some other cars too were'nt there :-?? If anyone has a copy would'nt mind having a read :D
Stefano 09-06-04, 12:49 PM Haha, I dunno. I like cars like that, mostly cause I grew up around 'em I guess.
Probably when I was 16 I thought it would have been sooo cool to have in Italy an American car, any car I mean, even a Lumina or a Taunus. Anything that wasn't officially sold in Italy, or even better had an exciting name, was soo cool to me.
Now that I'm 24 I can recognise better good cars from less good ones.
bassist5 09-06-04, 12:54 PM I've been into cars like that my whole life..
Stefano 09-06-04, 12:56 PM Well maybe not enough to understand how poor the Uno is!!! :cheesy:

Heh, don't get me wrong, I know they're not the most sophisticated car ever, but I like 'em. My grandpa beat the hell out of his Uno and it's still going strong, it's never had any major problems. I hate driving it cause it doesn't have power steering and in the morning it's a ***** to start it, but I dunno, I still like it.

Jebross 09-06-04, 04:30 PM Nice pictures all... I got all excited when I read the post that started this thread, then I realized that some people don't read much. The text below is from the post that started the thread:
OK, ANYWAY, here's the idea. Get a picture of your car, kind of 'arty' if possible, and post it here. There's a catch, though. There has to be something in the background that shows a landmark, or something unique about where you live.
Kind of a combo 'show off' thread and a 'where do you live' thread. So, if you live in a one stoplight town, get a shot of that light. Hahaha
Kudos to all that filled both criteria! Great thread idea CleveSaab - finally something that has motivated me to get a digital camera!

Secondly, they are way too artistic! :(

That is EXACTLY the reason I posted the criteria that I did. I want people to go out and get NEW pictures of thier cars....not the same old sorry a** pictures from thier hard drives that they took two years ago and that we all have seen 20 times in 10 different threads.
"I have no camera" is exactly ZERO excuse in todays age of $10 disposable cameras or $15 disposable digital cameras.
I still haven't posted a beauty shot for my 1999 9-3 ...although I have plenty of pictures, but does anyone really want to see my car in my driveway???
 No. I will go out of my way to get a good shot...

As I understand it, this should be a thread just for pics that would look good as somebody's computer wallpaper (great idea BTW), it's not the "show us your car" thread. So, as I would have never though about using one of the two pics you posted earlier as wallpaper on my PC, the last one you posted seems to mach a bit better the criterias.
Which one is yours BTW?

So delete my post then. SO SORRY to take up all that valuable space with my cr@p. Also sorry that I'm illiterate and didn't read the whole post and did that as a spur of the moment thing. (In fact, I think I will refuse my diploma tomorrow because of it.) I feel so ashamed that I didn't run out to my car that was parked in my hideously embarassing looking driveway, and go to the nearest Wal*Mart, to spend more of the money that I need for gas, to buy a disposable camera so that I could take a special picture just for this. Of course why not go all out? I could have just gotten some top of the line 35mm Kodak film and taken out my old Pentax K-1000 with the telephoto lens, driven to the beach, taken 36 shots of my car, and gotten it all developed at the 1-hour and then scan them all and post them. But, I think it's taken up more space to argue about it than to let it go. Therefore, I'll leave it at that.

If I didn't have a sub back there I could get even more stuff in there. On the fogs I love the amber lenses. Something about the color and they help the crappy OEM headlights out at night.

In fact, I did this once long before I was a moderator, HERE.
Had to say that because now that I'm a Mod, I don't want people to think this is somehow a truly OFFICIAL thread.

That's a good pic Tweek, but I thought you had retired the 900 until you could fix it up the way you wanted it ...

You've got my e-mail address.

They are awesone, dip. What kind of camera do you have?
Thanks. The pictures are taken by a cheap 2-megapixel Minolta X20. We have a better camera, but I always carry this little Minolta with me in case I see something interesting along the way ;)
Just so we don't have too many shot of Saabs in the owners driveway. Let's not loose sight of the original reason of this "Beauty Shot". I personally love to see Saabs shot in their natural habitat.

First off, let me say this is not an OFFICIAL SaabCentral post (whatever that would be).
Hahaha

NineThreer 08-10-04, 07:15 PM In a perfect world, every driveway would have a Saab. My neighborhood isn't pefect but we've got 4 9-3's on one street. (a lot of interesting vehicles; an S600, a CL55, an S55, XJR vert....The 9-3's probably the most fun though)

I'm going to guess that you haven't driven the S55, S660, or the CL55 before ... I would put those way ahead in the fun factor (based on what I have read as I've never driven one either  ).
I'm sure the 9-3 is a better all round, every day car though! :cheesy:

I just got back from Detroit late last night and slept in this morning. For some reason, after the 9 hour drive home, I wanted to go driving. The rented Subaru Outback wagon was uncomfortable because the seats did not fit me and there was too little elbow room. Getting back into the Saab was a relief. I took the long way to town today and remembered to bring my camera. It was cloudy and almost misty, but a great day for driving. The leaves are just beginning to change color, perhaps I can take more pictures in the next few weeks. I am really glad to get back to the mountains.

The tail lights are not smoked, they're in a shadow.
