OK so I want to go stage 3 on my 2002 Saab 9-5 Linear with about 97,000 miles on the odometer and an automatic transmission... I was told that i can not go higher than stage 3 because of the auto transmission... What I really need is a comprehensive list of things that need to be done so I can get to stage 3 successfully... I think my choice of tuner is either between SQR or Nordic at this point... The only thing that I have done to it so far is an open air intake from Genuine Saab.

Yup same here. .I had to convert my own in church couple sundays back. But I am actually looking into the needs for stage 3. I know that you will need at least a 3inch Downpipe. And according to Chris if your tuner specifies a 3.5bar FPR you can get for 65 buck on GS. I also read that its a good thing to upgrade your instake pipe aswell(also on genuinesaab.com) Good luck my friend.
The way that I understand it is that with the automatic transmission stage 3 is the highest you can safely go because the transmission can't handle the excessive torque. I do believe that there was a member of this site that had a stage 4+ aero with an auto transmission, maybe he will chime in.

You could actually higher than stg 3 but it'll be $$ wasted as it'll has to be detuned to the torque limit of the auto trans which is close to the torque generated for stg3.
Beyond stg3, you'll need to change out the turbo. Extra $$.
What you gain above stg3 is higher bhp, but torque still limited.
Some of my clever frens removed the torque limitor and blew the trans
If you have not gotten additional h/w enroute to stg3, those recommended by your chosen tuner would be a good quide.
I had a stage 4 on my auto for a couple of years, but I agree the torque limitation negates some of the potential power gain.
I also found the auto transmission way too lively at this level of tune.
Planting the accelerator on the exit of a fast bent would induce kick down, which of course, momentarily unloaded the wheels during the gear change and sideways was the direction the car chose
i have a 2003 aero 5 spd automatic with stage 3. the sentronic transmission does an excellent job of managing/delivering the added power with smooth shifts and no drop off in boost. stage 3 more than enough in my book, planting the far right pedal in pretty much any gear damn near risks sending you back in time. lol.
as mentioned, going to a higher tune on an automatic would almost be a waste (at least for an aero) as you're teetering on the torque limitation anwyay. not sure if stage 3 on the LPT makes the same torque as stage 3 aero since they have different turbos. either way the 5 spd automatic is more than up to the task. to bad the 2002 and earlier automatics didn't have the manaul mode of the 2003 and up. having control over the gear selection greatly improves drivability and power delivery when having fun in the switchbacks or playing around on the hwy.
as to what's needed for stage 3, depends on the tuner. their website or reseller should be able to tell you what's required, although that may not be the whole story. some hardware upgrades (even on an untuned car) will provide benefits and consistency in power. in my case the tuner i went with doesn't mandate an upgraded intercooler, but i put one in anyway. one of the best mods i've done. shame they (bsr) don't specify it since allows you to maintain peak power in hostile (hot) conditions and also gives a slight boost in performance since the flow rate of an upgraded intercooler outpaces the flow rate of the stock unit.

Yeah I dont plan on going any further than probably stage three. I dont want to blow out my engine or push it. So i think I will just stick with the stage three for the next two years lol until I buy a new saab.

Thanks for that info I actually plan on doing my intercooler after the downpipe and FPR(if needed) is done I already started doing the reseach on the intercooler thanks to this forum it shouldnt be a hard job to do at all..
Another thing is that I think SQR website has a outline of parts you would to upgrade for the different stages so you cou check out there site and see or evn give them a call.

sounds like a plan. the drop-in intercooler upgrade might be easier than the front mount since it fits in the stock location and reuses the stock piping. plus you don't have to remove the bumper. i have the ETS and would recommend that one, but either option should be more than enough for the stage 3. good luck!

That maybe true but I dont have the money for that, so I was just gonna go the route that a lot of people on here went. The Ebay IC an piping, I have done some research and it should be that bad of an install.
