Hi,
i have a 9-5 Aero manual, when i see the 0-60mph times in reviews(230bhp) they say around 6.5 secs. Now call me an anorak but i dont care!! I have tried timing my aero to get to 60 in that time and i find it impossible, its more like 7.2 seconds! First of all should the needle on the turbo gauge go slightly into the red then drop back out of the red the harder you accelarate? Also it's geared very short with about 35mph in first and 60 in second, does that sound right? I have a feeling it should be pulling right up in the red on the gauge but i might be wrong!! I've had some quick cars like Sierra Cosworths and Imprezza's but they seem too feel a little quicker than my Aero(which i love too bits) which is a little dissapointing! can anyone help and if so what could be the problem?
Also removing fuse 17 or disconnecting the battery for 10 mins will force the ECU to adapt when the car is next used - drive it hard and its ready for optimum performance rather than "self adapted" for economy and efficiency.
Unless tuned or Tech II fiddled with , the boost gauge won't go right into the red - this is normal.
Run the car dry, fill up with decent 98/99 Ron fuel, pull the ECU fuse as suggested, and thrash it. Take it to your safe drag strip area and give it a whirl.
You're not sad, I found myself on a quiet county road this morning doing some 0-60 times, mines a auto 2.3t Nordic stage 1. The best was 7.4 worst 8.3 - it's not an exact science! Remember yo're probably not using a flat road with optimum conditions with precise equipment + the cars not new anymore!
So when you say pull fuse 17 out do you mean leave it out or just remove it then put it back then thrash the car? I have tried blocking the pipe up with a bolt but it hasnt made any difference!
"As you may be aware, in drag racing the timer
doesn’t start the instant the car begins to move. An
optical sensor shines across each lane, and before the
race can begin, each driver must “stage” his car by
moving it forward until the front tire blocks the beam.
When the beam is blocked, the “Staging” light is illuminated
on the starting tree to show that the driver is
in position.
The ET timer doesn’t start until the front tire rolls
forward out of the beam. The driver has a small amount
of flexibility in where he positions his car before the
start. The distance the car can move before triggering
the timer is called “rollout.”"
In essence, this doesnt count the first 6-12 inches of motion when launching.
When using a stopwatch, you tend to take the time from zero mph. When at a drag strip, or factoring rollout into the equation using a g-timer, you are actually timing from just above zero mph.
Manufacturers and the auto press tend to use the latter, simply for the better times.
What about automatic transmisions, mainly those after tune. Mainly those, because as far as I know, autos have limited torque in stock settings. Are they able to keep up with manuals?
Yes, the 5 speed automatic cars have a 350Nm limit. People seem to run 400Nm reliably.
