View Full Version : What kind of turbo on my 89 SPG?
What kind of turbo came on the 89 spg and was it water cooled?
I thought that after 88 the turbo was better.

The TE 05 turbo, (smaller-faster spool, water cooled) was on the 90+ SPG's.
I think your 89 still has the oil only cooled T3.

At first, Saab used a Garrett Systems turbo (T3), which was cooled by air and engine oil. From 1988 through 1990, water-cooled T3s were fitted. In 1990 Saab began using Mitsubishi TE-05 turbo's in the SPG models only. Also water-cooled, the TE05 was slightly smaller than the Garrett T3s, which gave better spool-up. In 1991, all 900 Turbo's were fitted with the TE05.
You have a water cooled T3. That's a good thing IMHO.
Can the Mitsubishi TE-05 Be fitted to the 1989 and what would be needed to make the change?
One more thing, is the opening and the bolt paturn the same for the stock waist gate and down pipe?

I looked at the green plate on the turbo but can't see anything but a couple lines of numbers. Im sure that it is the stock Garrett turbo but what is "then" got to do with my second question? Can the TE 05 be put on the 89 spg and what will it take to do so?
What about the bolt paturn and opening, is it the same on both? The reason why Im asking is there is someone on ebay that is selling headers and down pipes. My son bought a header and it is very nice stuff and great prices. I need to ask him questions to see if he has anything for our cars. Just want to have my info right.

Mitsu-turbo is a direct fit. Nothing needs to be changed.
Did the swap once, nice spool-up, crappy topend if you want more performance out of the car.

That's not quite right. It may be for the US market, but it's not for the rest of the world. There's a Mitsu on my '90 T16 (full height, tupperware free)
