Hi, I have a 2003 9-5 Aero 5 speed. Its 100% stock and I'm not going to
add too much to it.
I'd love to be able to hear my turbo more.
I'm not sure what to modify so get some more noise out of the turbo
It can be heard normally but its very quiet which is good most of the time, but I love the sound of the spool up and air release.
One method I've tested is to disconnect the Air Intake at the Mass air flow sensor (I think thats the Mass Airflow sensor), and have it run straight without an air filter (yes i know , I'm jeapordizing my 9-5 :nono; ) .
This did give me the sound I was looking for but it causes irregular idling and occasionally hi RPM on startup, not to mention its sucking up unfiltered and un-intercooled air.
Is there any sort of mod which can be done?
Thanks for reading.

Cheapest mod: Roll down your windows. I'm just kidding...but my engine sounds like a diesel and the funny thing is that I can't hear a thing from it until I roll down the windows. What I'd recommend you do (and it's very cheap) is to install an open air filter with a...er, 3-inch flange, I believe??? That should help you hear some cool noises from your car. And then you'd have to worry about your air filter sucking up water, which is a different story. In that case, you can always get a drycharger, or create a splash guard.
So im gonna have to create some sort of splash guard or just avoid driving in wet conditions which I do now as much as possible.
Hopefully Ill be able to get this done soon, but if anyone else has ideas about blow off valve or what nots let me know,
OK I guess I should have read the Sticky thread first heh. ;oops:
"
If you are after the pshhhhh sound associated with some turbo cars then ditching the standard airbox for an aftermarket air filter is the way to go. Just buy a "universal" style cone or cylinder filter with a 3" inlet and fit with a small length of 3" inlet tubing. Fabricating a splash guard underneath the open air filter is recommended otherwise you run the risk of water getting in and hydrolocking the engine."
This pretty much answers the question about sound.

Yes, that pretty much answers things...and I just replied to one of your posts in a different thread concerning the same question...using the same link to infocog! Wow...wonder if a moderator can delete my previous post.
Ah yea I see.
I deleted my reply there I guess no point double posting. :nono; But for anyone else who stumbles onto this thread about Turbos and sound for their 9-5, the answer is above on the html link.
I'm still driving around without any type of splash guard. I have a drycharger back-ordered, but even without a guard the filter never gets more than a little damp from large puddles and heavy rain.
Good luck, the sound you will get from a universal open filter is awesome.
I too am new to Saabs and looked at the K&N setup- I don't want to chance the water intake though.
Has anyone tried the larger size intake tube from Saab USA- It is the newer style from 03 and up. Its only $23 and combined with a S and B drop in sport filter I can keep the water out. Yes/no??

Even without a splash guard or drycharger, IMHO, it's gotta be PRETTY hard to suck up enough water via the air filter to kill one's engine. I mean, you'd have to be wading in water that's like...knee deep or so; in that case, I doubt that a splash guard will help much. Still, I'm very paranoid about sucking up water ...and it's also better to be safe than sorry.
If you want to go the cheap route, get a universal air filter from your local auto parts store for $15 or so and then replace your stock one with the univ. but keep that plastic du-hicky box; waaaaaay safer than a splash guard or drycharger.
Ok I ended up removing the enclosure for the airfilter, and just have the tube connected directly to a cone air filter, and... The sound is awesome. Exactly what I wanted to get. The spool up and air pressure release is VERY audible inside and out of the car.
The Air filter cost 30$ at Canadian Tire, and took under 2 hours to remove the air filter box and connect the filter to it tube running from mass airflow sensor. I had to cut off the bottom ring clamp as it was rusted down.
I love my 9-5 Aero even more now Ill post a video soon im gonna be borrowing a high quality camera with excellent audio recording so anyone interested in a similar setup will hear what its like.
You guys were totally right about just running an open air filter and I appreciate it! Thanks Saab_lpt, saabcog (especially for the tutorial on your site) and the rest.
Ok I got a hold of a quality camera and I recorded a quick test video in an underground parking garage so the turbo is VERY audible.
Its just a quick 15 sec video of what the turbo sounds like. Its a bit louder then usual in a parking garage then it is outside, but its still quite loud outside also, Ill post a new video from on-road shortly.
I only barely touched the gas here, up to about 2500 RPM, so its quite different at 5000rpm
Great video (Had to put headphones on to listen to it while at work )
I will be installing my kit I ordered from GS today...only question I have left is where did you end up installing the cone filter. I checked out my setup, and im assuming my new filter will end up tucked on the side of the engine, but I was worried about heat. I see the airbox, which I will be taking out, and I see the airflow sensor with tube coming from that...but how far down did you end up putting the filter?
Thanks, this info will help me out a ton for tonight
Imagine you are looking at the front right fender to get an idea of how this image lines up with the car. The filter from GS will be different, but the spot should be the same. It fits between the engine bay, wheel well, bumper, and the fender in its own little space. Heat soak shouldn't be an issue.
I want to also suggest that people who are looking for more "turbo sound" should (after installing an open intake) purchase an after-market DV, like the Forge 007, and install it in reverse. The sound of the Forge DV when installed backwards is a lot more crisper than the stock Bosh DV installed in the normal orientation.
I get a Phut-tush-squeek. Sometimes just a phut-tush and sometimes a squeek-tush. I need to record it some time. Like I posted above, I have a reverse mounted Forge. My Bosh would only do a Tusssh sound.
no one can see my images? I don't know what to tell you, they show up on my screen. I'll re-link them after lunch.
Here is how I modified the stock Bosh DV to "improve" the sound about a week ago. Don't try this one at home without adult supervision. :cheesy:
It worked, as I thought it would, but not something I would drive around with. I could have blown some rock-hard mighty putty in the turbo... and that would've been bad.
I think what you are talking about is a later model Snorkel which is a cheap and good upgrade to do.

Ok im home and am able to see the pictures. But its still not that clear. My kit comes with the filter and a little connector thingy that i guess fits into that tube thats yours is connected to. You still have to connect it to that metal thing right? Maybe its the mass airflow thing? From the motor, I have a tube, then a metal thick clamp which is the sensor i think, then that goes into the airbox.
Wow. well thats a pretty clear picture. Thanks. But first thing comes to mind, how does that not get wait. I was picturing it being way up higher, now that it does not have to connect to the airbox?
