I was poking around eeuroparts as my car needs a new thermostat, and discovered there's an 82C degree thermostat. The stock is 89C. That's 192F versus 180F. This might be something to consider for people with tuned cars (or stock aeros) in hotter climates.
I've been running with an 82C stat in my NG for maybe 2 years in the UK. I can't say I noticed any change in performance at the time I did it.
The fan still kicks-in in the normal way in traffic and the motor warms up from cold in the same time. I can still get the car to back-off boost in hot weather going up our equivalent of a mountain pass in Buxton, but I've done no back to back test.
Vigge says that the cooling capacity of the NG is good in any case, I imagine the 9-5 is better being a larger car.
FUel economy is better whent the car is at proper operating temp. Quite a few respectable and knowledgeable people on here advise against the 82 degree. Engine wear is more too.
I have used a 82 degree in both of my Saab's over the last few years and never notice any difference. I bought them at my local Autozone.
