So the gear shift knob on my car is pretty much starting to fall apart. I see several different shift knobs availible for the 9-5, but don't show anywhere how to remove the old one and install the new one.
I want to retain the reverse lock out, but need some help.

Ive bought a second hand leather gearknob and gaiter - so the old one gets cut off but will the one ive just bought go straight on or does it have to be "glued" or something?
You don't have to cut the old one off. There are tabs inside of the knob and you have to stick something up in there to detatch them. I'll get the instructions later and put them up.
Sorry for flaking on this one...forgot about the instructions and I'm at a different computer so will have to try and remember again when I get home.
Basically what I did was insert 3 (I think, might have been 4) slim flat things into the underside of the knob...slid them up into the knob under the leather and they go up into these slots and push 3 tabs back enabling you to pull the knob off. I think I used nail files...been a while can't remember. It took some wiggling and I broke one of the tabs off of the leather knob removing it but I guess that doesn't matter if it's an old knob.
edit: Holy cow Chris I just looked at the thread you linked. Mine didn't look anything like that as I had to retain the original reverse lifter and assembly. Basically all I got was the outer cover piece of the knob so I had to keep everything else intact.
OMG i clicked on the one link and they distroyed the knob and the pa=lastic to get it off. -I just wouldn't understand why saab would not make it easier than that and they do....
If you look at the inside f the knob there are three places where the clips from the plastic piece go.
You have to stick something thin under the know to release it. - Very simple design, but if you didn't know how to do it, you end up destroying everything. (ask me how i found out)
To rmove the plastic piece from the shifter rob, pull up until it comes off. Becarefulnot to smak yourself in the face. (ask me how i Know)
Please do not destroy your shifter like discussed on that other one.
BTW my keyboiar is going crazy so please excuse my englisgh
I've never seen a shifter like that before. Does it vary by year? Every one I've seen looks like the one in the other thread - plain leather sewn like a baseball.
Yet GS and other talk about this one being stock:
I like the one with the shift pattern insert better. (edit: oh, I guess this is the one for the 9-3 (not 9-3SS) but it fits 9-5 too).
Yeah i guess i should've been specific about me doing it with my viggen.(9-3) but they are the same... I like the leather only one better than the insert, so it's going on. (Did it today) So i guess went on...
Paul, thank you for posting these detailed photos on how to remove the shifter knob. It made it so easy to replace the worn shifter in my 03 9-5, with the still mint one that I kept after my old 900 died!
has anyone tried using shifters not from SAAB. is it possible to use a shift knob with like screw in adapters etc? i want an aftermarket aluminum with a little more weight and SAAB doesn't offer any that are like that.
You can, but if it isn't made for reverse lockout then you will lose that feature. On my old 900's I used a Billet aluminum shift knob, Was going to put it into my 9-5 but prefer the cool touch of leather on a hot day
these knobs do not delete the lock out they use it so its a perfect fit.
