Okay so....

There are a few things about the car that bother me. First of all, it was running about 27psi of boost with the wastegate cranked all the way to the end of the threads. All of this boost on 30lb injectors. Not good. I set the base boost back at a safe 7psi, and put a stock APC box in it.

Next, if I hold the revs at about 3000 and pull the dipstick, I see just a tiny bit of smoke, I am not too alarmed. I checked the check valve, and it seems okay. The PCV is routed from the stock metal line to a nipple on the intake. I think this is okay.

Also, I cant tell if the engine has been inface rebuilt with forged internals, because I cannot see inside an engine. But it definately seems like the trans has been rebuilt. It is very nice to shift and it makes no noises.

The Aero seats do not match the rest of the interior. I am on the hunt for light beige interior panels, and a back seat.

I dont know how the ECU has been modified. He dropped Jaks name a few times when talking about the car, which makes me think it might have the Stage I fuel chip. The seller seemed to think quite highly of the modifications, and boasted 300hp even though he could never give me any real specifics. Like "What kind of turbo is this?" all he told me was that it has a Stage III exhaust turbine.

Also, he seemed to bash the methods to which other people modify c900's. I dropped your car ironjoe, and he just laughed. I was like that car is no joke, best on net.

Anyways, I bought this car because it runs and drives so nice. So much better than my SPG in fact. The engine is so quiet, and the trans shifts so nice. Another added bonus is that there is really no rust on the car.

Things in the mail:

3" Piping for DP
Flange for DP
Forge BPV
Bosch Cap and Rotor
AEM UEGO 6 in 1 Wideband
Also, I have a few questions.

While idling the car pops a lot. Also, under about 16-18psi of boost the car sort of stutters. Mike D describes it as feeling like "The DI cassette is bad." Now, with my car not having DI, this makes it seem like it could be ignition related, and perhaps the popping at idle could be the same problem. Also, the car does not stutter under 10-13psi. And if it was pre-detonating I would assume the APC would send it to base boost which is rock solid at 6-7psi.

VERY nice car mate, not jealous ;)
Have you set your timing? Might be what is causing the issue :)
Daniel.

Saabeh
20th March 2008, 03:38 PM
I have not checked the timing. The seller says he retarded it a few degrees from stock. Maybe 18*?

What do you think I should set it at?

Saab-Daniel
20th March 2008, 03:52 PM
Set it @ 16 degrees at idle with no vacum-hose connected to the vacum-capsule (plug the vacum-hose), and see how it reacts... :)
That is the standard setting, if he retarded the ignition a bit, then it might be at 13 or 14 instead?
Get a timing light and check it, is my best bet...
Daniel.

Your popping could be cam related at low idle. Your car should burble nicely.

The stutter could be turbo back pressure at higher boost levels, else your turbo bearings may be out of spec.

The turbo is not even 4 months old. The popping is not a cam type thing. Its like a very mild backfire. The stutter under boost is definately not a normal backpressure related thing.

Rule #1 about owning a c900 convertible Mister. Never, I repeat, NEVER drive with the top down and the windows up. If you do this again you will be officially branded as the SaabCentral 46 yr old fakeblonde divorcee smoker.

Now that's outta the way, nice car. Definitely a cool starting point, but you really gotta figure out the specs with that turbo & ECU.

Pop open the ECU and take a look at the fuel chip. If it's written "1" or "2" with a permanent marker, it's probably a JSP fuel chip. Which may be likely since he was apparently mentioning him? Also, you could call Jak and mention the PO's name and see if he'll give you some information.

Also, nice aero seats. I can't wait til I get mine installed.

some of us want to avoid frost bite while driving with the tops down before convertible season begins! pretty sure it's colder up there than it is here, and i've had a few top-down days. when it heats up, those windows are going down!

Quit holding out on pics of the interior! :p

1990 + 900's have the same seat brackets as 9000's right? So I assume its a 90+ c900 you have there?

lucky you :)

EDIT: What are the HD Bilstein shocks like? Be honest are they to stiff? Would you get the standard bilstein shocks over the HD ones?

LOL @ LOLPWNED

Its funny IronJoe because rc89pl met me, and I have a "Jew-fro", I am suprised he called me a female.

Anyways, it was about 30 degrees out jerk and I was on the highway doing a million mphs.

The Bilstein HD's rock. I had them in my SPG too. They are not soft by any means. I really like them, and I usually dont care about ride quality (I own a toyota 4x4, its stiff).

I will get some pictures of the Aeros soon.

Anyways, I have some plans for then next couple of months.

I am going to take off every single SPG panel and the bumpers to repaint them and redo the weather stripping. I have a full bumper that needs to be repainted as well. I plan on deleting the chrome strips with body filler or something. Maybe I will just paint them black like Robs white SPG.

Thanks for all of the complements. Time to go install my Forge BPV.

It looks like you're missing the heat shield that goes in-between your battery and the elbow exiting the turbo. This is an important piece because the exhaust gets very hot and can damage the plastic body of the battery. The heat will also reduce the service life of the battery.

Saabeh
21st March 2008, 08:47 PM
Yeah I know its missing. I took it off to swap batteries and never put it back on. I am making a new DP very soon so I will be moving it anyways.

Saabeh
24th March 2008, 06:27 PM
Okay problem time.

My car is really bucking/hesitating under boost.

I unplugged and capped the vacuum line running to the boost retard module and drove it. It bucks MUCH less and does not hesitate. Can those little things be modified too much, or can they fail? The PO said he modified it by bending the arm back so it retards the timing more under boost.

I have the harness and DI/APC ECU from a 9000 because I want to do DI. I know I need a few other things. So if I cannot figure this out quickly I will just go and put on DI.

How do you remove the harmonic balancer on a c900? I only ask because I have never had to do it, and I need to gather some DI parts in the Junkyard.

Its behind the pullys at the front of the engine (closet to the firewall) and I assume you'll need a harmnic balancer removal tool because its pressed onto the thrust washer I think.

I didn't know the c900 has one :( I've never done I but I have read about doing it.

TheRedBaron
25th March 2008, 08:23 AM
There's a diaphram inside those retard capsules that may break, which would create a vacuum leak and render it inoperable, I believe.

Saabeh
25th March 2008, 08:32 AM
They run from the vacuuum line that is directly above the butterfly valve in the throttle body. At idle it wont leak because the throttle is not moved.

TheRedBaron

They run from the vacuuum line that is directly above the butterfly valve in the throttle body. At idle it wont leak because the throttle is not moved.A vacuum leak doesn't only affect your car at idle. Under boost, it becomes a boost leak. It will throw off your fuel metering.

Yeah totally, I was more-or-less thinking out loud.

TheRedBaron

I'd bet 75% of all running problems we get on 900 turbos can be traced back to air leaks

What do you guys think about black SPG panels, and Black super aeros on my red convertible? I think it would look evil, especially because the top and trimming is black.

saabchilten
25th March 2008, 11:27 PM
everything but the black super aeros. it might be a little too much when coupled with the trim, and they'd be absolutely impossible to keep looking clean.

All it needs now is some paint, and another o2 bung welded in for my wideband.

I also put in a BPV recently. It works very well.

http://www.saabphotos.com/gallery/albums/album855/IMG_1223.sized.jpg

Its funny because for some reason it sounds like an SSQV, except it works way better then my old one did.

I am going to try and get DI working this weekend.

Also, has anyone run an exhaust with no muffler or cat? I had a glasspack in my SPG, but it would be cheap to just do 3in piping to the tail.

Alright so, I have not updated in a while so here goes...

I fixed the misfire problem. I ended up replacing the distributer, coil, coil wire, plugs, cap and rotor before doing the easiest thing... plug wires. I was so pissed when I still had the misfire under boost even though I had replaced the majority of the ignition system.

I had a spare set of wires that I just threw in for good measure after being unhappy with the car. Hopped in, and boosted to the moon. What a great day, the weather was nice and the car was running great. This was all last week.

So then this weekend, I was doing some highway runs to see what my AFR's were looking like. After about a hundred runs , the clutch pedal went down and stayed there. I detirmined that my slave cylinder went bad. I was not to upset. I got a ride home, grabbed the Tacoma and towed the car from Acton to Westford on 2 highways. It was great.

I need to now buy a new slave and release bearing because I could not get the old ones off. I ended up cutting the slave in half! I could not get the pressure plate fingers down far enough to get the slave out. So now I have everything out and I just need the new parts.

I will do some engine bay cleaning and put it all back together.

Oh! Also I finished my whole exhaust. Its 3" from the turbo back with no muffler and no cat. It is rediculously awesome, especially with the top down. I will make some videos as soon as I fix the car.

IronJoe
23rd April 2008, 03:54 PM
Also - new cap, rotor, wires, plugs. Modded c900t's seem to eat ignition parts in my experience. Get the correct bosch cap and rotor, bougicord wires, and new NGK plugs.

Told ya so ;)

As for the clutch, make yourself a tool like the saab tool. I used a thick solid copper wire for mine, it's probably done 5 or 6 clutches over the years.

Saabeh
23rd April 2008, 04:05 PM
Yeah I know that. I have done 2 clutches so far, and both times the slave cylinder was not broken. Because the slave is broken, I was not able to depress the clutch to push the pressure plate in. How would you remove the slave without cutting it, if it was bad and would not hold pressure?

idiot_saabvant
23rd April 2008, 04:54 PM
Do you have the clutch depression tool? Easy to make http://www.saabphotos.com/gallery/album571/s41 and fitted http://www.saabphotos.com/gallery/album571/s43. I can depress my clutch while I take out the slave all by myself. Just have to have the engine immobile.

pierre

Saabeh
23rd April 2008, 06:20 PM
Oh my. I totally forgot about that tool. So that little piece connects to the top of the pressure plate to gain leverage for that fork. Then while you hold the fingers down, you can choose to put a ring to hold the fingers in or not. Correct?

idiot_saabvant
23rd April 2008, 06:28 PM
Exactly, or just pull the slave out and by-pass the pressure finger ring tool. All you need is square bar and two 2 3/4 inch or 3 inch u-bolts and gas wire instead of my splatter prone fluxcore.

Alright time for an update.

I ordered a new top an window, thats pretty fun. My clutch is working fine now. I am getting some wierd boost problems but I will try to figure that stuff out soon. I am ordering a JSP stage II fuel chip because I don't have one. I will also NOT be running DI because it would be hard to map it specifically for my car. I will be instead running an MSD 6 BTM for my ignition with a Soft touch rev limitter. I might run a 6AL box as well, I am not sure yet.

Also, I have my SPG panels off for paint. I will be painting them black and running Airflow fender flares with the spg panels and bumpers. I think it will be a sweet combo especially because I have all of the parts.

Pics? maybe later.

I started painting yesterday. At first it was coming out terrible. The black paint looked more gray, and the paint was all uneven. I was trying to get rid of the gray color by applying more paint. This did not really help.

Eventually, I let it dry. I then began to buff at the gray areas with a cotton t-shirt. This worked very well. I then buffed the panel and and is exactly what I was looking for. The finish is like satin, and I hope I can make the rest of them come out as good.

Pics later today.
