Hello Chaps,
I am on the verge of purchasing a 2001 facelifted 9-5 AERO Estate AUTO and was wandering what sort of fuel consumption I could get.
Would this 5 speed be okay or would I be better off with a 5 speed paddle shifter on an '03' car? I currently drive a 9000 AERO Manual(owned for 10 years now) Stage 3 manual and its been a great car for me, but fancy an Auto.
Also, what are the preferred mods to this car to make it a 'BETTER' ??!!! I love my tons of torque and overtaking ability.

You sound like your in the same boat as I was about 4 years ago. I had a mildly modded mint lowish miles 9k Aero manual, but I had to start driving the car as my everyday commute and in heavy London area traffic, I soon decided I REALLY needed an auto.
Before selling the 9k Aero, I used to get average 22-24mpg on that commute, after selling and buying a 04 9-5 Aero auto, I was getting 23-25mpg on the exact same commute.
I would recommend the paddle shift Sentronic from MY03 onwards, as at least it gives you the option of a sort of manual shift. I use my flappy paddles quite a bit out of town, and even on a motorway I drop it into manual mode, as you can use the torque in the gear you want like a manual, rather than the auto downshifting if you press a bit far on the loud pedal. I've found I get better mpg on a run in manual mode than leaving it in auto.

Ah.....now this is something youre going to have to forget about if you want the auto.
You can't expect 9k Aero Stage 3 levels of torque I'm afraid, as the autobox can't handle it.
Hirsch and Maptun torque limit their software for the auto's to 400Nm and Nordic to 420Nm.
And T7 isn't as adaptable in the same way as T5, so you really need to stump up the cash for a complete package, rather than being able to add bits at a time. This means a 9-5 Aero is expensive to do, as the hardware is really on the outer limits for supporting the standard software, let alone tweeked ones. Heatsoak and downward adaption can easily occur depending on temp conditions etc and driving style.
An Aero really needs a bigger intake pipe and better intercooler as well as the downpipe and race cat to gain any benefit from a then suitably written ECU.
That give me everything I need to know. I will go for a 9-5 AERO. The 9000 AERO Stage 3 looks like it will eventuall go to another caring owner I hope.
If you don't do too much city driving go the manual route, they are a lot better economy wise than both the 4 and 5 speed autos. (especially with petrol being a grand a litre)

Got a 9-5 AERO estate with paddle shift. Picking it up next week. Now it was mentioned that I can't get 9000 AERO Levels of Torque.....Well I was thinking....
I seen this little lot on ebay for just over £500 (See item number 170204418875), and I thought with a Stage 3 software and ITG Air filter, it should cost me about £1000 all in and I keep my existing exhaust. Easy enough to fit as well.......Any thoughts?????? A standard Stage 3 costs about £1800........
I still want the overtaking ability of my 9000 Stage 3 you see......
After that there is the handling..........I see that Koni have made an upgraded FSD (Frequency Selective Damping) damper that retains comfort but will dramatically improve handling???? Anybody used it yet?
 Errrrr, whichever one you recommend really. I know that Nordic keep the Torque to 420Nm.......since mine is an Paddle shift, 5 Speed autobox ?
Anything you say will be greatly appreciated. My 9000 spools up very quick, so the overtaking is more to the low end grunt...(Rarely hits 4500rpm my car) and I'd like my 9-5 to be the same......What would you say? I think that little lot on ebay is quite cheap and it hwlps with heatsoak (am I right). What about the Standard exhaust on my AERO? Lots of questions here I know, but I want my car to be right!!!!
You can't run any Stage 3 ECU with a standard exhaust.......
Your EGT's would be far too excessive......:nono;
You have to fit a 3" down pipe with race or sport cat and a 2.5 or 3" exhaust system after the cat.
As for suspension......Koni FSD.....hmmmmm......don't know anyone with it fitted to a 9-5 yet, but I've seen a few negative comments from 9-3 owners that have fitted them.
I'd go with a complete Eibach Pro damper and spring kit, or the Hirsch kit if you are happy to spend a bit more.
sorry I've just added another thread about tuning my9-5, only for the fact that I seen such a cheap Intercooler etc (Item Number 170208687462) on ebay. This thread was about MPG and I thought that others might want to see the above.
I was thinking of just having the Elkaparts Stage 1 ECU and the above and keeping the current exhaust. See the 9-5 Tuning thread. Also, where will I get the Eibach stuff from?
Thanks and apologies for going off topic. Just excited about a new car!!!!!!
Well, I have just sold my wonderful 9000 Stage 3 AERO Manual with a Competition clutch, (Standard couldn't hack the torque) and it is a real pain in traffic. My Porsche 911 clutch is like a toy car. It is light and easy to get the feel of. So, it is a paddle shift Auto I have gone for. Easy in traffic, and with paddle shift I can keep the engine in gear for overtaking. JOB DONE. I don't want any drag racing or track days from the car, but the country roads where I drive I need to have that torque to get past slow motors
It wasn't the clutch that was the problem for me, it was just the constant 1st to 2nd - 1st to 2nd -1st to 2nd gear changing and if you were lucky you got into 3rd for a little bit......
I just got so frustrated with having a manual......would never go bck to one for a daily driver.......an auto is sooooooo much more stress free
Have to admit, I am looking forward to the paddleshift. Easy Auto box to drive with but I can hang onto a gear for overtaking. It will be really intersting to see how it copes with a Stage 3. Hopefully it will be a little more economical as well. When I upped my 9000, it was better just from being able to 'breathe' better.
