if I want to play my MP3 player on the truck I have a radio fm transmitter that I plug into the cig lighter and plugs into the mp3 player headphone jack, it broadcasts on any frequency I want and I just tune the fm radio to that frequency and voila sound...

Chiller,

I want a hard wired one that can be controled via my steering wheel controls and will recharge my iPod at the same time. I'm planing to install it so the iPod will be out of the way, probably on the inside of the console arm rest... have looked at the method you use and it seems that Harmon-Kardon's is the best.

Do you have a 9-7X? From what you describe I don't think so.

So what you do has no relevance to a 9-7X.

Here's the one I'm using on my stock 6 disc radio. It was completely plug and play and only took a few minutes to install. Navigating it is a bit difficult at first (it gets much easier with use) and my iPod does hang now and then, but I expected that (My 3rd gen iPod hangs up every now and then anyway- I never had that trouble with my 5th gen). It's still worlds better than a FM adapter. You're able to control the iPod through the HU, the steering wheel controls, or directly. When text displays, it does scroll so that you get the whole info. It also adds an auxiliary input. The tune and seek buttons are used to forward/skip tracks and the preset buttons 1-6 are used to select and navigate through the options. I hid mine in the glovebox. It does recharge the iPod as well.

PIE GM12-POD/S (http://www.cardomain.com/item/PIEGM12PODS?vq_id=none)

PIE GM12-X1 interface cable - no splicing, soldering, or anything else necessary. Direct plug and play if you have XM (http://www.cardomain.com/item/PIEGM12X1)

I got it and the cable shipped to my door for $135. Search for CarDomain coupons online for details. CarDomain does not show that it fits, but PIE's website does. CarDomain actually recommended the wrong one. the GM12-POD/S is the one you want.

Tim

PS: I installed Sirius in place of my XM tuner using the SIR-GM1. It does work together with the iPod adapter (I'm currently running both). Every now and then the Sirius unit does flake out, but that is a known issue with them. It's not often, nor annoying. To fix it, just turn off the radio and turn it back on.

Thanks Tim,

That sounds exactly what I need. I have XM as well as the 6 pack in dash CD player (Bose system).

This may seem like a stupid question. I got the above adapters. But how do I install it?

To install the iPod adapter:

The first step is to get some room to work. I took an easy way out and just pried my glovebox around the hook holding it up and let it fold down. You then have easy access to the area with the XM unit. The XM unit is the box sitting just behind and below the glovebox.

Then, unplug the wiring harness from the XM box. Plug your adapter in between the stock harness and XM unit.

Run the iPod dock connector somewhere convenient. Mine cable runs over the glove box. I can leave the iPod sitting in the glove box or remove it and use it easily (and with no cutting required).

If you're doing the Sirius adapter as well, you need to unbolt the XM adapter from the bottom, unplug it, and plug in the Sirius adapter.

I hope this helps. There may be a thread with pictures on Trailvoy or the TBSS forums. I would take some and post them, but my car is literally thousands of miles away. If you have any questions, I'll still do whatever I can to answer them though. Good luck!

Thanks. I found this thread about how to find the XM-tuner module in a Trailblazer. I guess the method is the same with the 9-7x. http://forums.trailvoy.com/showthread.php?t=38002
I thought I'd have to pull out the radio, but I am glad I don't.

Did you disconnect the battery while installing it?

Edit: I also found this thread with pictures.

So did I. The installation was really easy once I knew what to do. Thank you again.

Thanks for the great information fellas.

Just installed the P.I.E. GM12-POD/S with the GM12-X1 Interface that I purchased from Autotoys.com. I ended up having to unbolt the XM Unit due to the tight space and cables, but an easy installation none the less. Working exactly as you described.

I was curious, did anyone connect the Red Wire to a +12V ACC Output for Retained Accessory Power?

I did notice the IPOD contines to Charge after ignition is turned off as described in the Installation Instructions.

not sure how well that worked for you, but, i was doign some research and found this site. Peripheral Electronics. With this company, you install a module that does a few things at once and all without buying after market head unit. First of all, it connects through the display and allows you to browse your library with programmed buttons on the head unit. Next, the module charges your iPod at the same time as listening to it to keep your battery full while enjoying the music. Also, the module allows you to experience high quality sound as if you just had a CD in. If any questions, feel free to PM or reply

I've been so pleased with the P.I.E. GM12-POD/S with the GM12-X1 Interface on my wife's '05 9-7X that I got one for my '06 9-7X. I have the OEM Nav System in mine which makes an obvious difference. Fortunately, install was exactly the same.

Has anyone with the Nav figured out how to use the steering controls? I use the << Seek Buttons >> to skip forward and go back all the time in the '05. Would really like to be able to do the same in my '06. Can just imagine what P.I.E. would say since they did not list the adapter as compatible with the 9-7X.

y8tiger... I noticed in your autotoys review you mention an adapter that displays song info on the head unit (for a higher price). Just wondering what that one is? Any help would be appreciated.

I was referring to the Dension Ice>Link, which was going for approximately $500.00 or more.

I was abroad for three weeks. When I came back in mid January my 9-7x wouldn't start. The battery was dead. I hooked it up to the one in my wifes Prius and it started just fine. But the PIE Ipod thing doesn't work anymore. It charges the Ipod but wont let me control it or even hear the music.

Any ideas?

Butters,

This might work for you.

I know it works on my wife's stock 6 disc radio, but I haven't got it to work with my Nav System.

From the P.I.E. GM12-POD/S Installation Guide:

MANUAL / ADVANCED MODE

In ADVANCED Mode, the IPOD screen and controls are disabled and all control is done through the radio.

To switch from ADVANCED to MANUAL mode (or vice-versa) press preset 6 until "5 to MAN" (or "4 to Nav") is displayed and then press preset 5 (or preset 4).

Good Luck.

Sorry for the newbie question. Don't want to steal the thread either. I purchased the PXAMG plus the PGHGM5 harness.
I have a 2009 Saab 97x 5.3i,(with XMradio, 6 cd changer and the radio). There are 5 connectors on the PGHGM5, and I am not sure if it is long enough to connect to the XM radio, the Media gateway and then to the back of the radio. Are there any diagrams of this being installed on a Saab. I have easily accessed the XM radio from underneath the panel of the glove box. But really don't see any easy access to the radio. I was under the impression that this could be hooked up to just the xm radio and controlled through the steering column controls.

I am better with diagrams, but an explaination of where to connect the 5 from the PGHGM5 harness would help out.

Thank you in advance.

It seems as if my PIE adapter has died. It was intermittently playing out of only one side and then stopped working entirely. I believe that it was also causing the battery to die after the car sat for more than a week. The dealer replaced the battery under warranty, I removed the iPod adapter, and haven't had any trouble so far. I may replace it with one of the USA Spec adapters as I have heard better things about them.

Sounds similar to my problems. Could there be a battery or something in the PIE adapter that needs to be replaced?

Since the the P.I.E. GM12-POD/S Installation Guide recommends that you disconnect the battery during install, I am thinking a jump start might just fry the adapter. Assuming that you both Jump Started your 9-7X's...

Well. It still charges the Ipod, so it isn't all fried and dead. :D

One of the problems I had with the PIE was that the iPod cable would fall out of the black box. I could tell because one channel would drop out and then both would go. When the cable was plugged back in, it would work for a few months/weeks until it fell out again. I probably should have taped/glued/zip tied it on.

That one looks like it would either replace the stock XM or plug directly into the back of the stock headunit.
