I have a 1997 900 non-turbo hatchback. A year ago the oxygen sensor was replaced (for unpredicted and significant acceleration/idling problems---a VERY miserable trip home from vacation in the rain with a fully loaded car and 3 bikes on the back). Recently my "check engine" light turned on again even though the car was acting fine and my local SAAB-specialist mechanic told me that the computer was telling him that I had a problem with the oxygen sensor again. He also mentioned something about the catalytic converter as a related problem according to the computer but I can't be more specific than that. However, he also told me that despite what the computer said, he did NOT think that there was a problem with the O2 sensor since he had been working for some time on another 1997 900 non-turbo wherein he got the same message and had replaced the O2 sensor several times, but that never solved the problem. He says that this is a known problem with the 1997 900 but that he has done research and cannot find anything or anyone who can tell him what the problem is so that it can be corrected.
I'd appreciate any thoughts folks might have. The car is going back to my mechanic this week and if he cannot solve the problem, I will take it back to the dealership. If it's truly a known issue, SOMEONE must know how to deal with it. Many thanks.
