I have a '05 4.2i. For about a year now, I hear this high pitched rubbing noise when I steer to the left. It's not terribly loud and doesn't happen all the time, but when it does happen it continues until I turn the truck off. I think it seems to occur after I've been driving for more than 30 minutes. When I've had it at the dealer for routine maintenance, they said they couldn't make it happen. Next time I take it in, I plan to drive it until it starts making the noise.

Anyone had this problem or know what it might be?

If this is really a rubbing noise, there must be chassis/suspension evidence..

Try silicone spray on all plastic and rubber in the vicinity of the steering, both inside and out..
Has the power steering pump been checked as a source ? They do emit a high pitched squeal when under stress - the cause could be in the steering gear..

Thanks for the thoughts earthworm, I don't know if any of that has been checked out, but I'll bring that up to the service guys next time I take it in.
