the paint was worse than i first thought and it really needs repainting, keeping on top of red cars is bad enough but to have one with the pigment that has seen better days is just a total nightmare ......

i think im going to invest in a car cover....

later a t7 head im thinking
fancy having the 2.3 rocker cover just to look flash hahaha
think i would like to tart up the engine bay some time

now that i thought the body was ok to run with for now... i would like to get the arches and bumpers re-painted due to a couple of parking mistakes and stone chips....

i thought i would set about getting rid of the interior and maybe putting some new rims on her..i opted for the 16" aero wheels as in my opinion saabs especially the classic 900 only seem to suite a handful of rims and this being one of the best so i just happend to come across a set.. here you go ...

not the best looking rims in the world but i thought i would give it a go to refurb them myself....

this shows the various stages i had to go through using nitro morse paint stripper it was a nightmare...
i did get them back to bare metal though!!

the capitan
20-07-07, 09:03 AM
next up is to start with 400 grade wet n dry sand paper with lots of soapy water and start to polish the lips, when the corrosion appears to have gone then you can start to use 800 grade and then 1000 and then 1200 grade i didnt go any higher than this because no-one seems to stock it locally i thought this will do...

after this has been done the wheel needs to be degreased-i used meths and after i used hot soapy water and scrubbed them and rinsed with hot water let them dry and then masked the lips that i had been working on up this was a little time consuming but once you have done the first wheel it wasnt to bad after that..

i think i will post some pics to show you every stage this might help somebody that wants to do a similar job.......

philb
20-07-07, 12:59 PM
So are these a separate set to those that you are selling/have sold?

the capitan
20-07-07, 04:03 PM
hi phil yes these are the same set somebody wanted to pay good money for these rims at the national but when i started to refurb the last wheel it had a nasty reaction to the paint and etching primer so i have had to start again!!!!!

gutted naturally as a lot of work went into this i am going to be posting some pics i took last night after i stripped it back to bare metal with nitro morse,il keep you posted...

davlyn has a couple of sets for sale one in need of refurb and one that is in very good order...if interested.......???
are you the same chap that pm'd me on the other saab site??

philb
20-07-07, 04:08 PM
Yep, I pm'ed you. I assumed they were sold at this stage since I hadn't heard anything in a while. Sorry to hear about the bad reaction on wheel 4, but keep up the good work, the other 3 wheels looked amazing!

Holy $#&! that looks unreal! Man I cant believe how much of a change that made, this is quickly becoming one of the best C900's around, only thing I can think of you can do now is lowering it and tinting the rear lights and some clear coners...

Oh and yeah then you've got to get ~200+kws out of the engine

the capitan
26-07-07, 08:40 AM
not sure about it being one of the best around!!!!!!
ive seen loads of really clean and well presented c900's around of course i would like to be one of them one day! :D

yes that is what i am going to be doing when i have the funds available ...initially i wanted to see 200-230 bhp as i didnt want to destroy the gearbox to quickly we ill have to see!!!

Car i s looking really well. I like the fact that the insets ( not sure of correct term ) on the door cards are leather as well, instead of the usual suede.
I see what you mean about the paintwork though, it reminds me of my red lpt of the same colour. Its borderline.. looks like the back of the car is in better nick than the roof and bonnet?

Its bloody wierd actually:
In this picture, the paint looks perfect:

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f336/binksuk/28052007214.jpg

And in the next, presumably taken a few seconds later:

http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f336/binksuk/P1000659.jpg

Wtf! It seems like it has a grain, and from a certain angle, its faded, from others, its fine. Anyway, get those wheels onto the car!

the capitan
26-07-07, 11:02 AM
on a sunny day after waxing the car looks perfect but the roof is excellent like glass and the front and back are ok in fact the whole top of the car is in very good order it is the body kit that is faded the front bumper needs repainting and the back has a couple of scratches and needs repainting the side skirts are boarderline i can tpolish them too much as theres not much paint left on them!!!!

butyou are right in certain angles the car looks good and others it looks faded..... weird!

Red paint on any car is hard to keep looking good. The pigment is such that they all go cloudy, you almost have to cut the paint every time you polish the car. Otherwise looking good!

Very true - I had a 1992 Pontiac Sunbird GT whose paint was very vibrant up until the last couple of years of it's life, and then, it turned pink! (I guess even the clear coat and continual polishing she got couldn't hold up to the elements...)

That's a wikkid looking car. It was a picture a bit like this which made me buy my Carlsson. I didn't even know
what a Carlsson was when I bought my car. I just thought it looked nice! And the only c900 I'd had any
experience of was a 1985 flat-front, powder-blue 900i with a blue interior and no centre console. It's the light
settings which make the paint look a very rich red.

cleaning the steering wheel was a complete night mare i rekkon it could do with a bit more but it has taken me three attempts to get it like that!!!!!

i would love to lower her next and find some loverly rims to go on her i have now completed the refrub on the 16" aero's but they do not suite the car with the tan interior......so i need some ideas on what i can fit?!!
if i dont sell the aero's il stick them on the black carly i think they will look good on there.....

the capitan
27-07-07, 04:43 PM
on the list to get and do ....

front bottom fog light covers
head light protectors
nice rims
lowering springs
bilstein shocks
dump valve
black box apc tweaked
3" exhaust from turbo
replace all bushes and control arm joint etc on car with standard saab items to tighten up the ride

i have in the post winging its way to me a venieer dash kit,i should imagine its quite rare as ive not seen one before not sure if i should put it on this carlsson or the black one??....
it consists of
dash facia
glove box
ash tray front and rear
centre console surround
front door cappings and rear cappings which i have never seen!!!!

think it will go nice with the tan etc etc only then i will need a nardi wheel!!

or should i keep it and stick it in the black one with the grey leather???

I know this isn't going to be a popular suggestion, since you've just refurbed em, but if you spray the aeros all the same colour ( same colour as the 15" aeros ) they will suit the car pretty good :)

haha yeahs ive thought of that but..... i dont really want to put siver aero's on it because thats what a lot of people do i just want it slightly different, :cheesy:

Will be interesting to see how all that wood looks. I always wanted silver 16" aero's for my red Carlsson. I think the dark ones don't suit it! However... they do look rather mean on your car!

Hey, those wheels look great. I've got a talledega red SPG here in the US... have my 16" wheels done up the same as yours, they look amazing. At first I had mine silver with polished lip... then redid them in gunmetal with the polished lip. It rocks.

Also - where'd you get that wood kit? Do tell. I want one. That's the best looking one I've seen. I wonder if they make them for US LHD vehicles.

Thanks
