the major differences between the 2005-2007 model years? i'm looking to potentially purchase a 9-7 to replace my qx4. the newer model years (06-up) seem to still be carrying quite a hefty price tag, even used. the 05's seem more along my budget, even saw a few hanging around the low 20's mark with less than 30k miles. i would prefer a 5.3i, with our without navi. is low 20's within the realm of reality, or is that just a few dealers trying to get them out of inventory? any help is appreciated, thanks!

as far as i know the only dif. is the tire pressure monitors and the sunroof, the 05's had none standard i think you could add it in but i think the 06's had them as part of standard equipment...

us spec models might be dif the canadian models came with all other options...we only had like 1/2 dozen options anyway...they all come pre-fully loaded

I'm not confident there would a notable advantage to the V8 unless just having a V8 is the important thing. The 4.2 is rated at 295 Hp and the 5.3 is 300 Hp.

The '05s can be gotten for a good price... back in March, I bought my '05 4.2i with 14.3K miles for $26,200.00.

yeah i guess 5 hp doesn't make a difference a big difference, but i'm sure the torque numbers are bigger than 5 lb-ft, plus the 5.3i has much nicer wheels imo...there was another reason i am opting for the v-8, but i can't really think of it right now; its early...

here are the torque graphs I picked off someone in the tv board...

the hp numbers are a bit off but there is aprox. a 50 lb.ft. difference in torque, but look at the graphs, by the time the 6 cyl. is at peak torque of 275lb.ft near 4000rpm the V8 has already surpassed the 300 lb.ft mark at 2000rpm...

and for me there is just something to be said about the feel and sound of a V8... :cheesy:

meh....

Go with the V6. The increase isn't enough to warrant the extra initial cost and the higher recurring costs. Consider that a turbocharged 4-cylinder can easily develop more horsepower AND more torque than a porky V-8...and still get 32+ mph on the highway...

...but it can't tow a boat.

The V6 is 290 HP and the 5.3 V8 is 300. The biggest difference is in the torque. Also the V8 has the Displacement on Demand that shuts down 4 cylinders when not needed. The V8 also has the adjustable pedals standard that would be optional on the V6.

Even with all the tech. in the V8, it does take a lot more gas, but you probably could have a longer life out of it.

I forgot: the sunroof is standard on both on every year. If you find one without, it was ordered that way. The problem is that you still get charged for it! Isn't that crazy???

Gentlerman, I use the term loosly, the 6 is an inline 6 not a V6. The hp difference on paper is 'only' 5, but the torque and response with the V8 is a better experience. And the difference is mpg is minor at this point.

For the U.S. market '05s, there were essentially three options:

1. Color (black, blue, silver)
2. Sunroof or rear DVD player.
3. 4.2 or 5.3

There weren't any options other than those three for the short 2005 model year. I know in 2006 they started to add options such as navigation and you could get both DVD and sunroof.

Not that it might matter for the purpose of this discussion but statments have been made indicating that the 6 cylinder engine in the 9-7X is in the 'V' configuration.

The 4.2L engines in the Saab 9-7X are inline/linear configurations.

In my own opinion i believe the 4.2 I6 is a gutless turd compared to the v8. I drive them everyday becuase i am a tech at a saab dealer.

V8 difference is towing a 22 foot boat vs a v6, 18 foot boat - 1000lbs. Torque definately makes the drive a little more enjoyable. 2007 offers tire monitoring system - '05 and '06 not an option unless aftermarket.

I have the 5.3. My dad has a Bravada with the 4.2. Off the line, down low, and towing, the 5.3's extra torque is noticable. However, once rolling, the 4.2 can definitely hold its own. It's great at reving. On the interstate, the 5.3 will go up fairly steep hills around 1500 rpm without even thinking about downshifting. The 4.2 on those same hills will downshift and keep the engine around 4000 rpm. Gas mileage is roughly the same between the two. I really like the inline 6, but I would prefer it in a RWD car, not a truck. For a SUV, I think the 5.3 is probably the smarter choice.
