The Saab 90
The new Saab 90 comes as a two-door sedan and has been cleverly converted by combining the 900 two-door rear with the 99 front, effectively improving rear-seat passenger accommodation and increasing boot capacity from 20.9 cu.ft to 21.8 cu.ft. The fuel tank has been enlarged from 12.8 to 13.9 gallons, increasing the range to about 350 miles.
There is a five speed gearbox as standard, and a sunroof can be ordered as an optional extra, although neither automatic transmission nor power steering is available. The 90 is powered by the single-carburettor version of the 1985 cc. engine, which produces 100 bhp at 5,200 rpm. There are new 5.5in. steel wheels, a front spoiler and rear bumper extensions. The steering wheel has twin horn buttons on either side, and there is a new backrest angle-adjustment knob. Available are two new colours: rose quartz and cochineal.
There is a more powerful and lighter starter-motor, harder valve seats to permit the use of unleaded fuel, and an automatic fuel cut-off system to prevent running-on after the engine has been switched off. New twin-tube, low pressure shock absorbers are fitted all round.
The 90 retains the other features of its predecessor, such as headlamp wash/wipe, dual-circuit servo-assisted brakes and heated driver's seat. It is excellent value when considering a car around £7,000.
