Engine
4 cylinder, liquid cooled, inline engine longitudinally mounted at an angle of 45 degrees, and integrated with the clutch, gearbox and final drive. The clutch faces forward. Cast iron engine block. Light alloy cylinder head. 5 bearing crankshaft and camshaft. Chain driven overhead camshaft. Air intake and exhaust gas passages arranged in cross flow. Power from the clutch or torque converter is transmitted to the gearbox by chain drive (primary drive).

Power Transmission
Hydraulically operated single, dry plate clutch. A hydraulic torque converter replaces the clutch in cars with automatic transmission. Speed reduction between the engine and the driven wheels takes place in three stages: primary drive, gearbox and final drive. Top gear in the 4-speed and 5-speed boxes is direct drive (1:1). The universal joints are homokinetic and permanently lubricated.

Suspension and springs
Lateral wishbones and pivot-mounted, progressive action coil springs at the front. Lightweight straight and unsplit rear axle guided by 2 leading and 2 trailing arms and a panhard rod. Coil springs also at the rear.


Cars with carburettor engines (GL and GLs) have hydraulic shock absorbers. Others have gas shock absorbers.

Steering
Rack and pinion steering gear. Jointed and telescopic steering column with cylindrical corrugated sheet metal bellows. Impact absorbing perforated sheet metal cage below the steering wheel. 4.2 steering wheel turns (lock to lock), 3.7 with power steering. 10.3m turning circle diameter

Brakes
Diagonally split, dual circuit hydraulic footbrake system with 9 inch vacuum servo. Disc brakes all round. Total brake pad area of 196cm2 (116cm2 at the front and 80 cm2 at the rear). Total swept area of 2504 cm2. The handbrake acts mechanically on the front discs. The brakes are self adjusting and the linings are asbestos free.

Luggage comp. volumes
Ordinary luggage compartment: 602 dm3 on 3- and 5- door models ; 617 dm3 on 4-door models. 770 dm3 on the 3- and 5-door model with the parcel shelf removed. Approx. 1.6 m3 on the 3- and 5-door models with the back seat folded down, approx. 1.5 m3 on the 4-door models.
