Super Turbo revealed

The Geneva International Motor Show is always a special event in the motor industry’s calendar. This years show was no exception when Saab introduced their latest concept car, the Super Turbo.

Based on the three-door 900 Turbo, the Super Turbo’s most exciting feature is its 1 75 bhp engine. This is basically a cross between the standard 145 bhp turbo engine and the 250 bhp rally engine. As with the rally engine, the Super Turbo has a water injection system which sprays water into the inlet manifold when the engine is at full boost thereby cooling the pistons and cylinder head by as much as 1000c. The one gallon reservoir contains enough water for about 2000 miles of ordinary motoring. If the water runs out, however, a sensor prevents the engine from running at full boost.

Power is boosted to 175 bhp and torque to about 267 lbs ft, while top speed is pushed up to the 130 mph region. Standing start performance figures to 60 mph are about the same as the ordinary Turbo at just over eight secs, with 0-400 metres time of 16.5 secs.

To cope with the extra performance the track has been increased by nearly an inch whi1e aerodynamica1ly designed 6½ in wheels shod with Pirelli P6 205/60/VR 15 low profi1e tyres are used. The suspension has a1so been suitably modified as well.

Other ideas tried on the car include a deeper front spoiler while the rear spoi1er incorporates high intensity brake and fog lights.

Inside, the car is up to luxury standards with leather upholstery, four heated seats, rear reading lamps on flexi-stalks, central door-locking system and courtesy lights with a time delay shut-off.

At the moment this is only a stylists dream but it is more rea1istic than some of the extravagant creations that come from designers drawing boards.
