Tests have demonstrated that the peripheral vision of a person will detect changes in the position of a large instrument needle much more easily than changes in the figures on a digital instrument or the bar on a bar-type instrument

Instruments

Large, round instruments with white symbols and orange-coloured needles, set against a matt-black background. Easy to read-the driver's peripheral vision will detect changes in the positions of the needles.

The ample adjustment for height of the driver's seat ensures that even a driver of short stature will have good all-round visibility and a good general view of the instruments and controls.

The instruments and controls are indirectly illuminated with green light, which has proven to be most effective when the headlamps are on and the drive uses daylight vision in darkness.
The instruments of the Saab 900 are large and distinct, and have white symbols and yellowish-orange needles, set against a matt-black background. The instruments are deeply recessed, so that they will not dazzle the driver by reflected light and will not cause reflections in the windscreen at night. The instruments and controls are indirectly illuminated with green light, which has proved to be most favourable when the headlamps are switched on and the driver uses daylight vision in darkness. (Red lighting would be totally unsuitable, since it could be mistaken for warning lights in traffic and on the instrument panel.) The warning and indicating lamps are normally dark- the colours and symbols only appear when the lamp lights up. Each push-push switch is marked with a symbol showing its function. The switches are illuminated from the inside-with a weak light when the function is inoperative and with a stronger light when it is switched on.

The instrument panel includes 16 warning and indicating lamps, some of which are unused but are fitted in readiness for future functions. Several spare, blanked-off push-push switches are included, the number depending on the model and market for which the car is destined.
