The hydraulic valve lifters operate in an oil bath and are supplied with oil through the bolts retaining the camshaft bearing caps. The cam followers adjust themselves automatically to suit changes in the lengths of the valve stems at different temperatures. The most important benefits are very silent running and exceptionally high reliability.
The camshafts are chain driven, and the drive incorporates an automatic chain tensioner. This design is silent and minimises the service requirements.Due to the small diameters, the valves are more upright than in engines with only two valves per cylinder.
The combustion chambers of the Saab 16v engine are dome-shaped. The spark plugs are located centrally between the four almost upright valves per cylinder. The bottom of each combustion chamber consists of a piston crown, which is almost completely flat.
